There’s half the lemon left, now what? Certainly, your first action is to put it in the fridge. In fact, most people store fruit in the refrigerator, preferably cut in the refrigerator. But did you know there is a correct way to do this?

Of course, lemon is versatile and widely used in Brazilian cuisine. This is because the fruit is used for seasoning, cleaning utensils and recipes such as mousse, pies and cakes. What’s more, lemons are always in the shopping cart, which is why waste has also become very common.

This way, we will learn a little more about storing lemons in the refrigerator, care and the right way to store them. This is because it is also necessary to understand the time of consumption, and how a fruit reacts to the processes it goes through since harvesting.

Lemon in the fridge

Basically, food has stored energy, coming from the sun, the earth or the cosmos. However, the plant kingdom accumulates these energies while being exposed to them, unlike the animal kingdom, which eliminates them.

Thus, when a fruit goes through harvesting, it begins to lose its energetic properties, as these compositions vary depending on storage, climate and other conditions in general. In this sense, after being cut, manipulated or prepared for consumption, these foods lose their vitality very quickly, perhaps in hours, minutes or even seconds.

For this reason, it is very important to consume them within six hours after being cut. So, only cut the fruit when you know what you are going to do with it, as well as how much you will need.

How to store and preserve?

When we keep half a lemon, watermelon or orange in the fridge, that food wilts, softens, changes color and loses its quality, until it spoils for good.

The idea is to consume it as soon as it is cut. But if you happen to have leftovers, you can take half of the lemon and place it in a saucer, small porcelain pot or the bottom of a glass. Therefore, the lemon needs to be placed face down to avoid light and oxygen.

Finally, add solarized water until it covers the cut surface. This will act as insulation to prevent the food from oxidizing. Of course, this technique is not 100%, but it helps to reduce energy loss. Lastly, place it in the refrigerator in a part closest to the ice, not exactly in the freezer.

Another option is hermetic bags, those that have a snap to close, better known as a zip lock. Storing lemons in these bags helps with their conservation in the refrigerator, they last longer and are able to retain the fruit juice. These are sold in supermarkets or package stores.

Above all, remember to consume the lemon stored in the refrigerator as quickly as possible, use it at the first opportunity you get. Give preference to older fruits, perhaps a good alternative is to make new recipes with lemon, this way you avoid waste and still please your family’s palates.
