When you think of pets, dogs, cats, fish and rodents come to mind, but have you ever thought about how adorable it would be to have a bird at home?
It may seem that the interaction with domestic birds is less compared to that with other pets, but the bond between humans and birds can be strong and affectionate. As is the case with parrots, known as monogamous birds, they can develop jealous and protective behavior towards their guardian, placing them in the position of their partner. Anyone who has had or has a bird as a pet can tell you how loving and attached they are to their owners.
But it is worth remembering that only some species can be raised at home according to Brazilian legislation, after all, each species has a particularity of care and adaptation to place and climate. See below the list of birds that are allowed to be raised at home.
Canary
Known for singing beautifully, the canary is a domestic bird that will fill your home with great beauty through music. Also called the Belgian canary or kingdom canary, this bird is very easy to care for.
It has a bright coat in yellow, yellow-green, green and shades of orange in shades of red and with a size that varies from 12 to 20cm. The average lifespan of a canary is 10 to 15 years, although there have been canaries that have lived up to 20 years.
They are quite independent and happy even without the company of another canary, a good option for those who have never had experience with birds before.
Diamond de gould
This bird can come in 7 different colors, in vivid and eye-catching tones, which enchants owners of all ages due to its beauty.
The Gould’s diamond characteristic has a predilection for interacting with other species and not everyone likes interaction with humans. For this reason, it is recommended that they be raised in groups and that their cages have plenty of space, known as flight cages.
They are beautiful and charming birds, without a doubt one of the most beautiful species.
cockatiel
Want a fun and lively bird? Then the cockatiel is your choice! They are very beautiful birds and win over their owners with their incredible ability to imitate speech and/or repetitive sounds.
The cockatiel is from the psittacine genus, the same as macaws, cockatoos and parrots, bringing strong characteristics of these species, including their extroverted behavior.
They have a great attachment to their tutors, which requires a lot of attention and dedication from the tutors to make them docile and fun. Precisely because they are a little dependent, it is recommended that you have them in pairs, so that one can keep the other company.
Their size is approximately between 30 and 32cm and they can live up to 25 years, that is, the owner must be prepared for a long and intense coexistence with the bird and willing to dedicate himself to all the necessary care.
Manon
This bird originates from Asia, is from the Estrildinos family and unlike other species, this bird was created through human intervention. Japanese breeders carried out several crosses from the Lonchura Striata species, and finally resulted in Manon, a bird measuring no more than 12cm in size.
Manons are docile, sociable and live peacefully with other species. The use of a cage is recommended as they like to perch, and be careful when leaving them outside, they may escape.
Parakeet
This is the bird that most families around the world choose to have at home, and one of the most recommended for first-time owners due to its easy handling.
They are very happy and fun birds and their main characteristic is intelligence. With a very docile personality and very pleasant company, the parakeet quickly wins the owner’s heart. It is recommended that they be raised in groups or pairs (not necessarily of opposite sexes), as they require a certain amount of attention, which in their day-to-day routine the owner may not be able to provide.
This bird can measure from 18 cm onwards and, if well cared for and with a balanced diet, they live between 15 and 20 years.
Wild and exotic birds
There are two other groups besides domestic birds, exotic birds (birds not native to Brazil) and wild birds (non-domesticated species). In the case of these other groups of birds, authorization from IBAMA and certified origin are required. There are special cases, such as parrots, which do not require authorization from a guardian, but require specific certificates.
If you would like to resolve any doubts regarding this issue, you can contact IBAMA’s Linha Verde, on 0800-618080, the team will be able to inform you about the suitability of the pet shop and various other information.
Remember to respect Brazilian legislation! Check the origin of the bird before taking it home and take care of the necessary structure in your home so that it feels comfortable and happy.
