Birds can develop the behavior of plucking their own feathers!

Birds

Birds normally fuss with their feathers to preen and clean themselves. However, what many owners don't know is that this can end up becoming a behavioral disorder and they can start pulling them out.
Quer saber as possíveis causas desse comportamento?

We separate some of them:

– Diseases, such as cysts on feathers
– Parasites, such as ringworm
– Allergies to environmental factors or foods
– Stress andemotional, such as boredom
– Liver diseases
– Cancer
– Skin infections or inflammations
– Dry skin due to low humidity

Birds that are hyperactive may also begin to pluck their feathers, just as birds that are bored do. These birds also show anxiety (which can be caused by lack of fresh air, light or changes in heart rate) and generate aggressive behaviors. Another stressful situation occurs when the bird is moved from one location to another, or when there is a change in its usual environment.
Insufficient diet also leads to skin and feather problems which consequently leads the bird to pluck its feathers, in the same way that birds contaminated by internal or external parasites may resort to the behavior due to discomfort.

ATTENTION:

Feather plucking can become a habit if not treated in time. There is usually more than one cause that leads the bird to the behavior and, always with veterinary help, you need to treat all of them. It's also important to keep your bird occupied with toys (we have an environmental enrichment manual for pets that could be very useful, why not check it out?) or use behavioral therapy. Fatty acids, when added to the diet, have also been allies in the fight against this behavior.

REMEMBER IF:

Treatment alone cannot completely resolve this behavior, it has to be a combination of different therapies. Additionally, medical treatment that is not followed by behavioral therapy will often cause your bird to pluck its feathers again someday.
