New food label: find out about the main changes

Health

Swap the food labels brings significant changes to society? According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), yes.

Excess of some components in products is associated with an increase in chronic non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and obesity. With this in mind, it was decided to implement some changes to labelswhich facilitate this identification in a faster and more agile way.

It is worth mentioning that this does not just happen in Brazil! Chile, for example, was the first country in Latin America to join this wave, in 2016. There, products with excess nutrients carry a black octagon as a warning sign.

But what, in fact, will change on the labels of Brazilian products? To find out, just keep reading.

Change in the Nutritional Table

This item has the highest level of modification. A Nutritional table has added some addenda that can make reading and understanding easier.

The first change is that the table now uses black letters and a white background. This eliminates the use of contrast and prevents it from disturbing the readability of the information.

Subsequently, there will be changes to the information provided by the table – it is mandatory to declare total and additional sugars, the degree of energy value and nutrients per 100g or 100ml. This helps (a lot) to compare the number of portions, for example.

Furthermore, the nutritional table must be located close to the list of ingredients and on a continuous surface, and the division of this information is no longer permitted. It cannot be presented in hidden areas, deformed places or regions that are difficult to see.

It is worth mentioning that products with small packaging (less than 100 cm²) may insert the table in hidden areas, as long as they are accessible locations.

Front Nutritional Labeling

It can be said that this is the biggest innovation of the new standard. Will have front nutritional labeling aims to clarify to the consumer, in a clear, simple and direct way, which are the ingredients with high nutritional content inside that packaging.

Still from this perspective, the design of a earth to identify the high content of three main nutrients: additional sugars, saturated fats and sodium.

The symbol must be inserted on the front and top of the packaging, so that identification is easy.

Nutritional claims

In this regard, there were no major changes. Nutritional claims remain as voluntary information.

If use is made, some changes were indicated solely with the aim of avoiding contradictions with front nutritional labeling.
