When to take your baby to the dentist for the first time

Health

The baby should be taken to the dentist after the appearance of the first baby tooth, which happens around 6 or 7 months of age.

The baby’s first appointment at the dentist is for parents to receive guidance regarding the baby’s nutrition, the most correct way to brush the baby’s teeth, the ideal type of toothbrush and the toothpaste that should be used.

After the first appointment, the baby should go to the dentist every six months, so that the dentist can monitor the appearance of teeth and prevent cavities. In addition, you should take your baby or child to the dentist when:

  • Gum bleeding appears;
  • Some teeth are dark and rotten;
  • The baby cries when eating or brushing his teeth;
  • Some teeth are broken.

When your baby’s teeth start to come in crooked or far apart, it is also recommended to take him to the dentist. Find out what to do when baby teeth start to fall out and how to deal with trauma to a child’s teeth, here.

When and how to brush your baby’s teeth

Baby’s oral hygiene should be carried out from birth. Therefore, before the baby’s teeth come in, the baby’s gums, cheeks and tongue should be cleaned with gauze or a damp compress at least twice a day, once at night before the baby goes to sleep.

After teeth emerge, they should be brushed, preferably after meals, but at least twice a day, the last time being before bed. During this period, it is recommended to use a baby toothbrush and, from 1 year of age, toothpaste suitable for babies as well.
