Types of lipsticks – Textures + advantages and disadvantages of each type

Beauty

As one of the most used items in the world of makeup, lipstick comes in a wide variety of colors and types.

Lipstick is one of the most essential cosmetics when we talk about makeup. Easy to use, with different color options and the power to transform your look, it is one of the most used items in the beauty world. Therefore, there are also different types of lipsticks, with different textures and functions to choose from.

In addition to the traditional red, there are many colors currently available, from stronger ones to nude tones. Furthermore, you can also invest in those that match the skin tone of your lips, which can make all the difference in your makeup. Black skin, for example, looks great with more yellowish nude tones, like beige. Paler skin, on the other hand, goes better with pinkish nude tones.

However, it is important to keep in mind that good coverage does not only depend on the type of lipstick, but also on the health of your lips. So, don't forget to always keep them hydrated. Another tip for good coverage is to kiss a napkin after the first application and, after that, apply a second layer. This will ensure the lipstick lasts on your lips.

Now, let's get to the point: the types of lipsticks. The texture and finish of the lipstick can make a big difference in the way it is applied and the final effect, especially when added to the chosen color. Therefore, we made a list so you can decide which type is your favorite.

Types of lipstick

1 – Creamy lipstick

This is the most common type of lipstick when we talk about the subject and it never goes out of style. The creamy lipstick is very easy to apply and has a medium duration. This classic has great coverage, a very light natural shine and a soft texture, which can be very comfortable for everyday use. Furthermore, creamy lipstick can really nourish your lips, acting on hydration. Some creamy lipsticks already have moisturizing formulas.

2 – Bottom matte

Matte lipstick has become very popular among Brazilian women in recent years. It has a more opaque and dry texture and its durability is longer than that of creamy lipstick. Furthermore, it is more pigmented than other types of lipstick and requires fewer touch-ups throughout the day. Matte lipstick can be found in traditional format and liquid format, which leaves its finish even drier and velvety.

However, although its texture gives makeup a sophisticated look, you need to take some care when using this type of lipstick. As its formula is drier, the lipstick can end up cracking, so it is very important that your lips are very hydrated. Furthermore, if your lips are chapped, it's a good idea to avoid matte lipstick, as it can make the cracks even more visible.

3 – Satin lipstick

This type of lipstick can be considered a middle ground between the creamy and matte types. This is because it has a creamier and brighter texture than matte, but not as much as creamy lipstick. Furthermore, its finish is drier than that of a creamy lipstick, but not as much as that of a matte lipstick.

Its coverage is less pigmented than matte and more transparent, leaving a delicate and discreet effect, which is why it is a good option for everyday use. Furthermore, its durability is long.

4 – Gloss

One fashion from the 90s that is making a comeback is lip gloss. This type of lipstick is super versatile, as it can be colored or not, have glitter particles or not, and works great as a cover for drier types of lipsticks, such as matte. Its texture is very creamy and gives the lips a volume effect. Furthermore, its colored versions have been widely used in makeup as an eyeshadow format, giving a shiny effect to the eyelids.

However, the durability of the gloss is low and its wet appearance can make the lips feel sticky. But, if this isn't a problem for you, gloss lipstick can add extra charm when incorporated into your look, in addition to having a moisturizing effect.

5 – Sparkling lipstick

Shimmery lipstick was very popular in the 80s and 90s and is coming back into fashion. Its pigmentation is low, but it can be used as a cover for other lipsticks, as it has a metallic or pearlescent effect, which adds shine. Furthermore, when used only in the center of the mouth, it gives a volume effect to the lips.

Although this type of lipstick has shine, it is much softer than the shine of gloss, but still very charming. It has medium durability and works well in both day and night makeup.

6 – Batom vinyl

Vinyl lipstick has great coverage as it is very pigmented. Therefore, it leaves the coverage with even more vibrant and bright colors. Its texture is similar to gloss, as it has a very creamy effect. In addition, it gives a varnish finish to the lips.

However, like gloss, the liquid format of varnish lipstick can feel sticky in the mouth and its durability is average.

7 – Lip Tint

Despite being widely used on the lips, lip tint is not exactly a lipstick. This product is in liquid format and is a type of dye for lips and cheeks. Its texture is quite creamy and is available in red and pink. Lip tint has become a trend in recent years when the aim is lighter makeup, which gives the impression of health rather than great makeup production. And even though it has a very light finish, the lip tint has great staying power.

8 – Varnished lipstick

This type of lipstick is very similar to vinyl lipstick in terms of shine. Its finish gives a wet appearance, as if there was varnish on top of the lipstick. Furthermore, some varnished lipsticks have a moisturizing formula and greater pigmentation, which makes the color stand out more. However, its durability is medium to low.
