Silicone explantation is the surgical procedure for removing breast implants, something that many women are doing lately.
It is not news that Brazil is among the countries that perform the most plastic surgeries in the world. In this sense, the silicone implant is still the favorite and most desired by Brazilian women. And this dream of having big, full breasts has been nurtured for at least two decades. Until then, the standard of beauty praised a thin woman’s body with large breasts. However, contrary to this trend, more and more women are seeking silicone explantation.
It still doesn’t come close to the number of women getting implants in Brazil. But there is no denying the considerable increase in demand for the prosthesis removal procedure, also called breast explantation. The fact is that many women are regretting the procedure and are choosing to do the reverse process. The reasons are varied, ranging from aesthetics, following the wave of greater acceptance of the body as it is, but mainly due to health problems related to prosthetics.
Therefore, today we will learn more about what silicone explantation is about and the main reasons that are leading women to resort to this procedure.
silicone explant

For many years, silicone women were very popular, causing more and more women to want to get silicone. And although plastic surgery represents one of the greatest advances in medicine, which has transformed the lives and self-esteem of thousands of people, it is important to recognize that it poses risks. Therefore, the ideal would be to only do this in case of real need, but most of the time this is not the case.
Silicone implants, for example, are almost always linked to aesthetic pressures and dissatisfaction with one’s own body. Result of the pressure to follow beauty standards that are often unattainable. In addition to being a medical procedure like any other, it is a considerable investment, but none of this has stopped women from having silicone implants.
But not everything is rosy, the increase in silicone explant cases is proof that the procedure does not always work as planned for everyone. Furthermore, we are going through a time of transition, where there is more and more talk about self-love and accepting the body as it naturally is. In this sense, there is a growing wave of women who do not see the need to have large breasts and are even doing the opposite, removing their implants.
The dilemma of performing a silicone explant

Journalist Mayara Santos opted for silicone implants in 1990. Since then, she has had four other applications, the last being in 2016. However, she noticed that something was not right with her health, especially in the last ten years. . Among the main symptoms, she reports extreme fatigue, memory loss, tingling, hair loss, weakened nails, ear pain and even problems with social interaction.
About a year and a half ago, her symptoms worsened and she noticed rashes on her skin and a lot of difficulty breathing. According to the journalist, she sought out several doctors who were unable to identify the cause of the discomfort, as the tests showed nothing abnormal. Until one of the doctors presented him with a list of the main symptoms of Asia Syndrome, which, among other causes, could be related to silicone implants.
Knowing this, and with medical advice, Mayara opted for silicone explantation. In this way, she removed the 500 ml she had in each breast. After the procedure, she reports that her life changed completely, that her health was restored and that the prosthetics really harmed her health.
After suspecting that she actually had Asia Syndrome, the journalist discovered that the last application was rejected by Inmetro, which justifies the health problems she presented.
Other cases
And the journalist’s case is not the only one. The same happened to professor Larissa de Almeida, who had a silicone implant in 2012 and recently began to show various symptoms, such as weakness and memory loss. At first, the doctor recommended breast massage, which didn’t work.
So, she had some resistance to accepting the need for silicone explantation, but she opted for the procedure. After the removal, she reports that she no longer feels any of the symptoms, has more energy and a better quality of life.
There were also cases in which silicone explantation was necessary due to the patient rejecting the prosthesis, causing local hardening, called capsular contracture. In most cases, the procedure to remove the prostheses is motivated by health problems caused by the implant, but there are women who are doing it for aesthetic reasons, as they are no longer comfortable with the big six and want their natural breasts back. .
How silicone explantation is performed

If the woman chooses to have silicone explantation, it is a relatively simple procedure, faster and easier than implantation. Generally, skin is removed to adjust the size of the breasts. In this case, fat grafts are not recommended.
Therefore, the recommendation to remove prostheses is when the patient presents rejection, infection or health problems related to the implant. Therefore, in these cases, withdrawal must be made as soon as possible. If it is just for an aesthetic reason, there is not much urgency, just the desire to have natural breasts again.
Point of view of medicine

However, although there are cases of complications and health problems caused by silicone implants, this does not mean that the procedure is not safe. But it also needs to be better studied. The Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (SBCP) itself has admitted the need to better study this type of application. However, it maintains the position that these surgeries are mostly safe.
Because not all implants are similar, it is not possible to generalize them all. In the case of Asia Syndrome, it is new, until 2011 it was not talked about. It is a path to explore, especially because the symptoms reported by patients with implants are somewhat non-specific and may have other causes as well.
A survey carried out by the American Society of Plastic Surgery, ASPS in 2019 revealed the number of implants and explants that year. According to this survey, 299,000 silicone implants were performed and around 33,000 were removed. In other words, the number of patients satisfied with the procedure is much greater than those who opted for removal.
Around here, there is no survey like this that shows exactly the number of patients who chose to remove their prostheses. But this must be included in the next SBCP census survey.
In general, silicone implants are considered safe for most people. However, explant cases can be a warning of complications that should be investigated. It is a safe, legal medical procedure, but it also has its risks, like many others.
Celebrities who had silicone explants
And finally, let’s meet some celebrities who chose to remove their silicone implants.
Chrissy Teigen

Another who opted for the denture removal procedure was Victoria Beckham. In 2009, the former Spice Girl chose to partially remove the prostheses placed in 1990. However, two years later, in 2011, she had a complete explant. According to her, the decision to get an implant was caused by her insecurity when she was very young, something she regretted and that’s why she chose to have it removed.
Monica Benini

The jewelry designer and wife of singer Júnior Lima, Monica Benini was also one of those who opted for silicone explantation. She said in a report on social media that she had breast implants when she was still a model, influenced by this medium. Until 12 years later, she decided to take off the implants, as she preferred her breasts as they were before.
