Amid so many controversies in recent years, SeaWorld seems to be reinventing itself and trying to bring more ecological awareness to its visitorsas told Marilyn Hannes, president of SeaWorld San Diego, during a chat with journalists in the park: “We want to inspire people to take care of animals and the places they live in,” he said. “Here we love animals very much. The people who work with them at SeaWorld do so because they are passionate about animals, they are part of their families.”

Opened in 1964, the SeaWorld San Diego is located in an area of 768 thousand square meters in Mission Bay Park. In 2017, the park launched the biggest attraction launch in its history without leaving aside the classics.

NEWS

The big new feature at SeaWorld San Diego is the area called Ocean Explorer. For the whole family, this part of the park has interactive aquariums with different animals, slightly more radical toysbut which can receive children, and the Submarine Questthe main novelty.

In this new attraction, visitors take a scientific exploration expedition aboard a submarine. They become researchers and collect data to learn how to help and protect animals.

Os Aquarius They are also full of news. In one of them, visitors can enter and take a photo as if they were actually inside an aquarium alongside the fish. Giant octopus, moray eels and the giant Japanese crab are among the park’s new residents.

For those who enjoy a slightly more radical attraction, you can’t miss fly over hundreds of bubbles via chairs suspended by the tentacles of a giant jellyfish.

SESAME STREET BAY OF PLAY

This specially created area for children includes twirling teacups, a flying fish that takes passengers up and down during a journey across an imaginary ocean, and another ride that spins and slides from side to side.

RESCUE PROGRAM

O SeaWorld has an important program to rescue animals that have suffered some type of attack in the environment or that are sick, injured or stranded (SeaWorld Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program). The park’s experts save, treat, rehabilitate and release these thousands of animals back into the wild.

On average, 65% to 70% of animals rescued annually are rehabilitated and returned to the wild.

We had the opportunity to visit this animal rescue and recovery center at SeaWorld San Diego. Sea lions and sea wolves were some of the animals that were being treated by professionals and then released into the environment.

In 2016, the SeaWorld team rescued 403 California sea lions, 24 seals, 16 elephant seals, three dolphins, two Guadalupe fur seals and one humpback whale. They also took care of seven sea turtles and 534 birds from 61 speciesbetween them, pelicans, seagulls and herons.
