RIGOROUS WINTER

When he arrived in the United States, the cold was the biggest difficulty faced by the journalist: “The years 2014 and 2015 had the harshest winters in the last 20 years. At first it is different and even interesting to live in temperatures so different from what you are used to, but after three, four and even five months of severe winter, the body and soul react! The skin asks for sun, people become sadder, more withdrawn. But like everything in life, the curve reverses when summer arrives. It’s a collective ecstasy. The celebration of heat is captivating. Clear days until almost 10pm, everyone outside until the last ray of light, it really is a wonderful feeling to live in,” she says.

FREEDOM

Maybe that’s why the length of winter was what Renata Ceribelli liked least about the city. What she liked most was the feeling of freedom that New York provides: “In every way. From the safety of being able to walk the streets alone at any time of the day or night without any problems, the mobility of public transport with the subway running 24 hours a day, to the freedom of spirit. Let me explain: you can be whoever you want in NY. All lifestyles fit in the city, without prejudice, without judgement. The city stimulates your creativity and makes you feel at the center and at the forefront of the world. Not to mention that everything works. The city doesn’t limit you with schedules because it’s awake 24 hours a day. Anyway, it’s easy to say everything I liked and difficult to say what I didn’t like.”

A NEW PLACE EVERY DAY

Back in Brazil after two years, Renata Ceribelli Don’t miss having your feet stuck in boots and closed shoes for six months, but miss having a new place to visit every day: “A show, an exhibition, and of course, a party to go to. The city invites you to leave home and ‘try’ something new all the time. That’s why I usually say that New York rejuvenates us or keeps us young forever.”

WALK ON FOOT

When visiting the city, Renata likes to walk, walk and walk: “I always discover something new. But I can’t help but have a Saturday brunch at one of the many cafes I love in the city. Not even listening to good music, whether at a big show or in the city’s bars. New York is a musical city. And I learned that it makes a difference in life,” she says.

2. DINNER AT HARLEM

“Dinner at Red Roosterone very original restaurant in Harlem, with typical American dishes. The plan I suggest is to go on a Monday, have an early dinner (around 8:30 pm), and then hang out at the restaurant’s bar, which has a WONDERFUL jazz band. One night there and you will understand the sound, the dance and the way people dress, the entire culture of this NY neighborhood. It closes early, at midnight.”

Manhattan is very well served by bike paths. And getting to know the city by cycling can be a lot of fun. Cycle across one of the bridges! I suggest to Manhattan Bridgewhich will take you to Williamsburg. The attraction will be the bridge itself, all covered in graffiti. Or else the George Whashington Bridgewhich has a fantastic view and will take you to the other side of the Hudsonpra New Jersey“.

9. COFFEE WHA?

“It’s also a must to go for a night at “WHA Coffee?”. A club where names like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen e Jimi Hendrix. The place maintains the ‘underground’ atmosphere. Each day has a different band. I liked going on Wednesdays, when the house band performed.”
