Lymphatic drainage is an aesthetic procedure much sought after by women, which aims to eliminate swelling and fluid retention in the body. However, what not everyone knows is that this technique also works on the face. Facial drainage is also a massage technique that aims to bring similar benefits to the facial region.

The facial drainage technique is highly recommended for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes, as it brings several benefits. In this way, this procedure can eliminate toxins from the face, tone the facial skin, and also prevent the appearance of wrinkles and signs of expression. It is highly recommended for treating bruises resulting from trauma and plastic surgery.

Furthermore, facial drainage has a stimulating action on the defense system and oxygenates facial tissues, resulting in firmer, healthier skin. And best of all, this procedure can be done at home, with the advice of a specialized professional.

Therefore, today we will learn everything about this miraculous technique. Let’s go.

Facial drainage, what is it?

As previously mentioned, facial drainage is a massage technique very similar to lymphatic drainage, however, aimed at the face region. In this way, this massage works by stimulating the lymphatic system so that it works more quickly and effectively.

Therefore, the aim of this massage is to remove the lymph accumulated between the cells. In addition to unblocking the lymphatic channels. This reduces facial swelling and considerably improves blood circulation in the region, promoting a greater sense of well-being.

Benefits of facial drainage

This procedure promotes a series of benefits for the skin and we will list the main ones below:

  • Improved blood circulation;
  • Greater tissue oxygenation;
  • Relaxation of facial muscles;
  • Eliminates toxins;
  • Reduces bags under the eyes and smoothes superficial skin blemishes;
  • Reduces swelling in the region;
  • Relieves dark circles and post-operative bruises;
  • Revitalizes and tones the skin;
  • Slows down aging by stimulating the production of elastin and collagen;
  • Reduces stress;
  • Helps in the treatment of acne.

Who can do facial drainage?

Facial drainage can be done by both men and women, at all ages. It is highly recommended even for teenagers with acne problems, as it helps control pimples and keeps the skin clean.

However, this technique must be done with great care and specialized monitoring in the case of skin cancer. It also cannot be performed on people with very severe acne, grade 3 or 4, and when there are open wounds on the face. All this because the procedure can worsen such problems.

When to do facial drainage?

Facial drainage can be done at any time, but is more necessary when the face is swelling. Therefore, some situations are more suitable for carrying out the procedure:

  • During the menstrual period;
  • After undergoing dental treatment, such as tooth extraction, for example;
  • When there is a lot of fluid retention;
  • After facial waxing;
  • When you don’t get a full night’s sleep, with less than 5 hours of sleep;
  • When there are injuries or trauma to the face, it is usually after surgical procedures.

This massage is done with light, circular movements over the entire face, towards the lymph nodes. Therefore, to obtain more consistent results, the practice must be done regularly, at least once a week, when carried out by a specialist. The homemade version, recommended by the aesthetic professional, can be done daily.

Step by step: how to do facial drainage at home

As stated above, it is possible to do facial drainage at home. You can do it yourself, standing in front of a mirror and following the appropriate step by step.

To help you with this, let’s see below how to carry out this procedure at home in every step.

1 – Stimulation of the venous angle

  • Firstly, to perform facial drainage, you must start with the neck, making circular and/or pressure movements with the tips of your fingers under the collarbone area. Do these movements while remaining light and steady, 6 to 10 times. In this way, it will stimulate the venous angle, which is responsible for redirecting lymph to the bloodstream.

2 – Neck drainage

  • Then, start draining the neck, making circular movements on the side. Thereby putting pressure on the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
  • Then, also carry out the drainage process in the back of the neck, making movements as if you were “pushing” the lymph from the neck towards the clavicle.

3 – Drainage of the chin and mouth

  • In this step, place your index and middle fingers on the central part of your chin and start making circular movements, 6 to 10 times.
  • Afterwards, place your fingertips below your lower lip, and slide your fingers down to the beginning of your chin.
  • Now, with circular movements, take the lymph from the corner of the mouth to the center of the chin.
  • Position your fingers between your nose and upper lip, and start making circular movements directing the lymph towards your chin, outlining your mouth.

4 – Drainage of the cheeks and nose

  • Position your fingers close to your ears and make circular movements, gently pressing the area. Repeat the movements 6 to 10 times.
  • Then, do the reverse movement, placing your fingers on the side of the cheek, draining towards the ear.
  • Place your fingers on the side of the nose, and with circular movements direct the lymph to the corner of the ears.
  • Then, place your fingertips below the lower eyelid and slide with circular movements up to the ears.

5 – Draining the eyes

  • Place your fingers on the side of your face and start making circular movements from the corner of your eye to the back of your ears;
  • Then, place your fingers on the upper eyelid, and make the same movement directing the lymph to the ears;
  • Repeat the stimulus close to the ears.

6 – Forehead drainage

  • Place your fingertips under the center of the forehead, close to the eyebrows and begin to make circular movements, directing the lymph towards the ear region;
  • To finish, stimulate the part close to the ears and the top of the collarbones again.

7 – Stimulation of the venous angle

  • When facial drainage is complete, repeat the stimulation of the venous angle, making the same pressure movements with your fingertips. This time with cycles of 5 to 7 repetitions.
