Japanese restaurant in SP

South America

Nothing like dining in an authentic Japanese restaurant! And that’s what I did on my last visit to São Paulo: I met Shigueru.

Japanese restaurant SP

The chef who gives the restaurant its name was born in Nagasaki and came to Brazil when he was eight years old. He worked in restaurants in Rio and spent time in Japan. Two years ago, he opened the restaurant in the Itaim Bibi neighborhood, which has become a lunchtime spot, due to the countless companies that are around it. Shigueru makes traditional Japanese cuisine.

My lunch started with some delicious rolls, called ebi shinjo, of shrimp, carrots and mayonnaise and then we ordered a portion of shitake with shimeji, delicious!

Then came a combination, since I’m crazy about sushi, prepared especially for me by the chef – so proud!

It was difficult to choose the dessert, between the traditional caramelized banana and the banana tempura. I think I made the right choice and even ordered some green tea to go with it; perfect balance!

Hot dishes are some of the chef’s specialties, as well as broths, called nabe mono and recipes, such as Sukiyaki – sliced beef, assorted vegetables, tofu and mushrooms cooked with sweet sauce –, prepared directly at the table; and the Nabeyakki Udon – udon stew with chicken, vegetables, shimeji, shrimp, tikuwa, kamaboko, chives, egg, served in a nabe pan – both serve two people.

Nearby, it is one of the only Japanese restaurants that serves à la carte.

I am immensely grateful to chef Shigueru for the wonderful gastronomic experience and I can’t wait to return to SP to do it again!
