Who has never been enchanted by decorated Christmas cookies, very common to see in American films about this season? They are usually served on Christmas Eve or the next day, along with a nice glass of milk, right after the children open their presents.
If you’ve always wanted to have these beauties at home, today you’ll discover the secret and learn how to make them without much difficulty.

As you will see, decorated Christmas cookies are actually shortbread cookies covered with icing, made into Christmas shapes, such as booties, Christmas trees, snowman, gift wrap, Santa Claus and so on.
Of course, the recipe has a medium level of difficulty, as it requires some care and must be done in two steps. However, if you are already familiar with the kitchen, and even if you aren’t, it is possible to follow this recipe completely and have a much more themed, fun and tasty Christmas.
The recipe for the famous decorated Christmas cookies can be found below. It was provided to the website casa.com.br by pastry chef Mariana Oshiro, who also explained in detail the step-by-step process so that everything comes out correctly.
How to make decorated Christmas cookies at home:
What takes?
– 250g wheat flour
– 125g unsalted butter at room temperature
– 100g icing sugar
– 1 egg and 1 yolk
– 2 dessert spoons of vanilla essence
– 1 level tablespoon of cinnamon powder
– baking paper to line the baking trays
For decoration
– 150g of royal icing (white powder bought ready-made in confectionery stores);
– food coloring of your choice (give preference to gel colorings)
– pastry bags
– No. 3 or 4 pearl pastry nozzles
For this amount of icing, the ideal is to make up to 4 colors, at most, one being white.
How to make?
Start by mixing the trio flour and butter in a small bowl until you get crumbs. Then add the other ingredients, mixing with a spoon. As soon as the dough gains more consistency, it’s time to use your hands to knead.
The dough must be kneaded until it is homogeneous and no longer sticks to the container. If necessary, add flour little by little, until it no longer sticks.

Now just make a ball with the dough and place it inside a plastic bag, the kind people use to store food in the freezer. So, you need to crush the ball so that it becomes a plate. This will make the job much easier when rolling out the dough.
But first, the dough needs to rest and gain consistency in the refrigerator for 24 hours. After this time, cut the chilled dough into 3 equal pieces. The piece you are not working with should go back in the refrigerator.

To roll out the dough, place thick plastic over it, perhaps polypropylene; and roll out with a rolling pin. The cookie dough should be approximately half an inch thick.
Now just use Christmas-themed dough cutters and place the cookies to bake on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.

The oven, in fact, must be preheated and the cookies, which will become decorated Christmas cookies, must bake at 160 degrees, for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden.
How to decorate?
Prepare the icing according to the package instructions until it becomes a white cream and doubles in volume.

The second step is to separate this coverage into portions in the quantities of the colors you want to use and, in small containers, dye it with a small amount of dye and mixing well, until the color is uniform. If it’s not the shade you want, just add more coloring little by little.
With the colored icing, each one in a piping bag with a pearl tip, it’s time to decorate. Remember: the cookies must be cold to begin this step.

If you don’t have much skill, outline the drawings or simply fill them in completely. The important thing is to work quickly with the icing, as it dries out when exposed to air. Therefore, an important tip is to keep the icing that is not being used covered with a clean, damp cloth.

Now just wait for the icing to dry and serve your homemade decorated Christmas cookies!
