The first is when painting the walls of your home, the ideal is to invest in a washable paint that will facilitate the cleaning process. This is because it is possible to have greater freedom regarding the products used for cleaning without the risk of damaging the wall.
Therefore, before starting to clean the walls, it is important to know which tub is used. If you were responsible, it will be easier to find out. If you don’t know which paint is used to paint the walls, or if it is common paint, the tip is to use non-abrasive products, such as water, neutral detergent and a sponge or cloth, to avoid the risk of ruining the paint.
For walls painted with epoxy paint, a more resistant type of dye, you can also use stronger, solvent-based products that will still not damage the paint. Remembering that walls with water-based paint cannot be scrubbed, in this case just a cloth with detergent is enough.
How to clean different types of walls
Now let’s talk about tips on how to clean walls, from daily cleaning to deep cleaning of various types of stains.
1. Daily cleaning
To avoid difficult-to-remove stains, the best option is to do simple cleaning on a daily basis. This way you can keep walls clean and free from heavy dirt.
- If you notice any stains or dirt on the wall, clean it immediately using water and neutral detergent on a cloth or sponge, then dry.
- You don’t need to wet the wall, just dampen the cloth in the water and detergent mixture.
- Then just leave the windows and doors open to ventilate the room well.
2. Cleaning stains
In the case of specific stains, it is necessary to identify the reason for the stain in order to remove it in the best way:
- For handprints, for example, those caused by dirt or dust on your hands, you can use a little baking soda. To do this, just put a little powder on a dry sponge and wipe it over the wall.
- In the case of fatty spots, you can also use bicarbonate, but mixed with warm water, forming a kind of paste. So, apply the paste to the stain by rubbing it with a clean cloth or dry sponge. If the stain is difficult to remove, mix warm water with vinegar and rub again until it comes out.
- Now if the stain is from a pencil, it’s much simpler, just an eraser is enough to remove the scribble. However, if it is a scribble with crayons or markers, toothpaste, a baby wipe or a damp sponge with baking soda will solve the problem.
- Pen stains are easily removed with acetone or alcohol, just rub a cloth dampened with the solution over the mark and the wall will be clean again. Be careful when doing this with colored paints, which can lose their tone.
- To remove mold, the best solution is water and vinegar. So, add a liter of warm water and a spoonful of vinegar to a spray bottle and spray on the stain, leaving it to act for a few minutes. Finally, wipe with a cloth to remove the mold.
- If the stain is blood and has not been cleaned immediately, you can use a cotton swab dipped in hydrogen peroxide and wipe it over the dried blood on the wall. But be careful not to rub the stain with cloths or sponges and spread the dirt across the wall.
3. Deep cleaning
For a deeper and more professional cleaning, you need to start by removing the main stain, as we saw above, depending on the dirt.
- Mix detergent and water in a bucket and submerge the sponge.
- Then, rub it over the entire wall (only in the case of washable paint, if it is water-based paint, the method is not recommended) gently.
- If the wall is very dirty, add vinegar to the water and rub it on the wall.
4. How to clean wallpaper
In the case of wallpaper, cleaning should be a little more delicate, so as not to damage the paper or cause it to come off the wall.
- First, remove dust from the wall, using a broom wrapped in a cloth or as a vacuum cleaner.
- Once done, prepare a mixture of warm water and neutral detergent and moisten a soft cloth or sponge and gently rub the wallpaper.
- If the covering is vinyl, use warm water and white vinegar, which in addition to cleaning, also removes mold.
- Finally, just dry and let air into the room.
