There are 111 blue ones registered. Royal blue is one of them, a strong and vibrant color, which is linked to royalty and nature.
Except for the elements of nature, the shades of blue we know today are synthetically manufactured, including royal blue. But when did this start? Well, at first “Egyptian blue” was the first synthetically produced color. Surprisingly, this happened around 2,200 BC, around the same time that the Egyptian Pyramids were built.
To achieve this tone, the Egyptians mixed limestone, sand and some mineral composed of copper, for example malachite. The mixture was heated to a temperature of 800ºC to 900ºC. The result was an opaque blue glass, which could be crushed and mixed with glue or egg white. Thus, creating a longer-lasting ceramic or paint.
But this was a complex process and one that could easily go wrong. Thus, as new ways of synthesizing other shades of blue were discovered, this method was forgotten.

Dark tones of blue were present in the decoration of Byzantine temples and illustrations on pages of the Quran, as it was believed that blue was Muhammad’s favorite color.
In the 1950s, neo-Dadaist painter Yves Klein created a shade of dark blue that became his trademark. Eventually, Klein blue (or royal blue) became very successful in the post-World War II artistic world.
(…) blue has no dimensions. is beyond dimensions, while the other colors are not… All colors awaken specific associative ideas, psychologically material or tangible, while blue suggests the ocean and the sky, which are, in fact, the visible nature of the most abstract .” – Yves Klein
