Boy's ideal weight (tables by age, height and BMI)

Boy’s ideal weight (tables by age, height and BMI)

Illnesses

A boy’s ideal weight varies according to age and height, and should be checked monthly by a pediatrician during the first year of life, as a weight that is too low or too high can harm his development and growth.

Generally, weight gain is faster in the first 12 months of life, and as the boy grows, the tendency is for weight gain to be slower, as the child becomes more active, burning more calories and decreasing the speed of weight gain.

It is important to remember that development is not the same for all children, and there may be times when a boy does not grow as much as other children of the same age. If you have any doubts about your weight, it is always recommended to consult your pediatrician or a nutritionist to assess the situation and identify whether there really is a problem.

How to assess a boy’s weight

To find out if the boy’s weight is within normal parameters, up to the age of 18, enter the data into our calculator:

The formula that the calculator uses to assess a boy’s weight varies according to his age:

  • Up to 2 years: weight evolution percentile curves are used for each month of life;
  • From 2 to 5 years old: weight is assessed according to the boy’s height;
  • From 5 to 18 years old: weight is checked using the child’s BMI.

In the first 2 years of life, it is important that growth is balanced and therefore, in addition to the weight percentile curve, other fundamental percentiles such as height and head circumference must also be assessed.

Weight table up to 2 years

Up to 2 years of age, the boy’s weight is assessed using percentile curves, which show how the child’s weight should change each month. This table presents the range of values between the 15th percentile and the 85th percentile, according to the World Health Organization:

It is important that weight gain happens regularly, as very rapid increases or very rapid losses may be related to health problems, such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism, for example.

If the boy’s weight is above or below the values indicated by the World Health Organization, it is recommended to take him to a pediatrician or nutritionist, who can carry out a more detailed assessment and check whether it is necessary to make any changes to his diet.

Weight table from 2 to 5 years old

From the age of 2 and up to the age of 5, weight should be assessed according to the boy’s height, as shown in the following table:

This table is constructed in accordance with the reference values indicated by the World Health Organization growth curves.

When a boy suddenly increases or decreases in weight, it may be a sign of a health problem, such as diabetes or hyperthyroidism and, in these cases, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician.

Over 5 years: Child BMI

To find out the boy’s ideal weight from 5 years old to 18 years old, BMI must be calculated. If the BMI is considered normal, the boy is at the recommended weight for his age and height.

To find out your BMI, enter the data into the calculator:

Attention: The children’s BMI calculator is not suitable for calculating weight before the age of 5, and it is more appropriate to follow the tables presented previously or follow the pediatrician’s instructions and the information in the baby’s notebook.
