Chinchillas are known for being very docile animals. But like any other rodent, they can bite in certain situations. And there are several reasons why chinchillas bite, be it their owners, other people or even other animals.
As chinchillas are quite passive animals, when they suddenly bite someone, the owner may be surprised by this behavior.
Chinchillas bite as a defense mechanism. Especially when they feel in danger. The little animal can feel in dangerous situations when it is caught by force or interacting with a stranger. If your chinchilla is not used to being handled, he may experience anxiety when picked up or left in the air.
These little animals can also bite if left in a small cage for many hours. Chinchillas need a cage large enough so they don’t feel anxious or trapped. It is also important that they spend time outside of their cage so that they can run, play and get some daily exercise.
If you have more than one chinchilla, or any other rodent, it is recommended to keep them in separate cages so that they feel more relaxed. This way, you will help them feel free and safe by meeting all their needs. Chinchillas need time to get used to their owner and the new environment, so it is important to be patient with the animal, so that they can understand that they are sure that the owner is not a threat.
Chinchillas can bite and nibble, know the difference:
Biting and nibbling are similar, but they are not the same. They communicate different things. A chinchilla bite can leave a small mark as chinchillas have long, sharp teeth. You may feel more shock than pain when you are stung; if this happens, clean the wound and apply a bandage. When a chinchilla bites someone, it usually doesn’t hurt. Nibbling usually means she is playing or asking for food.
If biting behavior persists, it is always important to take the animal to the veterinarian.
Prevent chinchillas from biting with some actions:
- Walk your chinchilla outside of its cage.
- Provide a cage with enough space so your chinchilla doesn’t feel trapped.
- Avoid picking up your pet too much.
- Don’t keep lifting your chinchilla and throwing him in the air, instead, sit on the ground and let him come to you.
- Prevent strangers from picking it up, as your chinchilla could become scared.
- Chinchillas are animals that are most active at night.
