Where to stay in Quebrada do Humahuaca: the main cities
The Quebrada do Humahuaca has some cities that function as tourist hubs, with a concentration of hotel, gastronomic and agency infrastructure.
The main cities to stay in Quebrada do Huamahuaca are:
Where to stay in Tilcara
Without a doubt, this is the best city to stay in Quebrada do Humahuaca.
Tilcara is a charming little village, full of restaurants, bars and good accommodation options. Already accustomed to the presence of tourists, at the same time it has not lost its indigenous charm and local traditions.
During the night, several restaurants transform into peñas, places with live regional music that will put that tango show you saw in Buenos Aires to shame. The place is welcoming and peaceful, but without neglecting the facilities that we like to have nearby.
From the bus station, buses leave for other towns in Quebrada, the state capital, Jujuy, and other destinations in the country, such as Salta. Exploring the region won’t be difficult from Tilcara.

Where to stay in Purmamarca
When I was planning the trip, Purmamarca was almost chosen as our base. The reason is simple: the landscape. This tiny village is right at the foot of one of the main attractions of the Quebrada del Humahuaca: the Cerro de los Siete Colores.
In fact, if your trip to the region is lightning style and you don’t have time to explore much, this is the best place for you. For those who are staying longer, it’s not a bad choice either, although I consider Tilcara better in terms of structure.
Purmamarca is friendly, has an impressive setting and also has several restaurant options, although it doesn’t have many hotel options.
The village also has a bus station (more like a bus stop), from where transport leaves to other parts of Quebrada. However, the frequency is lower than in Tilcara.
Purmamarca and Tilcara are 30 minutes away from each other.

Huamahuaca is the largest city in the region and can also be a good place to base yourself. Although it loses in charm to Tilcara and Purmamarca, you will have a good structure, several hotel options, restaurants, bars and a rich local commerce.
This is a good place to get in touch with everyday life in a city that doesn’t just live on tourism. Full of colonial mansions and cobblestone streets, Huamahuaca also has some interesting attractions, such as the town hall square and the Monumento a la Independencia.
Getting around between other cities in the region and other parts of the country is also easy. Several buses depart from the local bus station.

Where to stay in San Salvador de Jujuy
Capital of the province of Jujuy, San Salvador de Jujuy is a little further away from the rest of Quebrada: it is an hour’s drive from Tilcara and a little less from Purmamarca.
Despite being well connected by bus lines to the rest of the province and the country, the distance forces long daily commutes. Therefore, the city is not the first choice of base for those exploring the Quebrada do Humahuaca.
If, however, you need to stop by, there are good accommodation options to choose from. See some suggestions below:
