The sofa is practically everyone’s favorite piece of furniture in their home. It is where we spend our most comfortable hours in our home.
Watch soap opera? We watched it on the couch. Read a good book? Almost always on the couch. Taking a nap after lunch? We can even go to bed, but we have to admit that it’s better on the couch. But all of this is only possible if we don’t forget to clean the sofa.
As one of the most important parts of the house, it always needs to be clean. No one wants to stay on a dirty sofa, full of dust or infested with annoying stains.
But, if you think that to keep your sofa clean, you need an outsourced cleaning service, know that with simple methods you can do it yourself. We’ve put together some tricks to help you do this.
We’ve listed 7 great tips to help you clean your sofa
Tip 1: Do not use
The first tip is to know what not to use when cleaning your sofa. The first thing that should be left off this list is any type of product that contains chlorine. The second is washing powder. Last but not least, never use bleach when cleaning.
Tip 2: Dry or wet
When determining whether dry or wet cleaning is best for your sofa, you will need to take into account the type of covering your sofa has. The materials are varied, ranging from leather, cotton, suede, linen, velvet, leatherette and several others. To find out what the cleaning process will be like, just check the label with the instruction symbols, found on the bottom of the furniture:
- Symbol P: Means dry cleaning process, which can be done using a dry cloth. Some of them are specific and found in the supermarket.
- Symbol W: Means wet washing process, the most common. Water, vinegar, detergent, and other specific liquids are used.
- Symbol F: Means professional dry cleaning. In these specific cases, it is recommended to look for a specialized company.
Tip 3: Cleaning companies
Upholstery with very thin and/or sensitive fabric must be cleaned by professionals. You should look for trustworthy companies. The tip is to look for reviews of establishments online, or turn to friends and ask for positive recommendations. Some may focus on cleaning, permeabilizing and hydrating upholstery.
Tip 4: Cleaning leather or suede upholstery
Leather, napa or cowhide upholstery must be cleaned using: a damp cloth with water and neutral detergent. Dry cloths are just for removing dust. To preserve such materials, it is recommended to apply petroleum jelly or liquid silicone every three months.
For suede upholstery, it must be cleaned using: a cloth dampened with water and a little neutral detergent. Brush the sofa once a week with a soft bristle brush, respecting the direction of the fabric.
Tip 5: Clean if it is very dirty
For deeper cleaning, you will need: vacuum cleaner, water, coconut soap (liquid), soft bristle brush. The process works like this:
1 – Remove all cushions – only if they are removable – and vacuum the entire surface of the sofa
2 – In a container, place warm water and a tablespoon of liquid poop soap
3 – Using the brush, apply the solution to the entire upholstery. Repeat if necessary, but be careful not to get the fabric too wet.
4 – Remove excess of the previous solution with water.
Tip 6: Remove grease stains
In the latter case, you will need: talcum powder, soft bristle brush, paper towel, dry cloth and warm water. The process works like this:
1 – Place one or two sheets of paper towel on top of the stain to absorb the excess
2 – Apply the talc on top of the paper towel and let it act for five minutes
3 – Afterwards, remove the paper with the talcum powder and use the soft bristle brush to remove the stain. Rub gently, respecting the direction of the upholstery fabric.
4 – Finish with a cloth damp in warm water.
Tip 7: Remove detergent scum
For this case, you will need: warm water, neutral detergent, dry cloth, soft bristle brush and egg beater. The process works as follows:
1 – Dilute the neutral detergent in warm water
2 – Beat the mixture using an egg beater until foam forms
3 – Apply the foam to the entire surface of the sofa with the brush. Rub gently
4 – With a cloth damp in water, remove excess foam
5 -Finish with a dry cloth to absorb the liquid.
