8 main symptoms of uterine fibroids

Health

Uterine fibroids can cause different symptoms depending on their size, quantity and location in the uterus. The most common symptoms are abdominal pain and bleeding outside of the menstrual period.

Although in most cases fibroids do not cause symptoms and are identified during routine examinations, women may initially experience abnormal vaginal bleeding or changes in the menstrual cycle, and it is important to consult a gynecologist for a clinical evaluation to be carried out.

Since uterine fibroids are considered a benign tumor, they do not pose a risk to women’s health and can be treated through surgery to remove the fibroid or medications to alleviate symptoms, which must be prescribed by a gynecologist. See how the treatment for uterine fibroids is carried out.

Main symptoms

The main symptoms of uterine fibroids are:

1. Changes in the menstrual period

The presence of myoma can cause an increase in the length of the menstrual period, as well as increased flow due to changes in the function of the endometrium and increased contractions of the uterus before menstruation.

2. Bleeding outside of your menstrual period

One of the main symptoms of uterine fibroids is bleeding that does not correspond to the normal menstrual period, being more intense in the case of submucosal fibroids, which are those that penetrate the uterine cavity and can cause severe anemia.

3. Dor abdominal

The pain caused by the presence of fibroids in the uterus occurs due to the twisting or exit of a fibroid through the abdominal cavity, and it is important that imaging and physical examinations are carried out to confirm this situation.

4. Feeling of pressure in the belly

The presence of fibroids in the abdominal cavity can cause a feeling of pressure in the lower part of the abdomen due to the size they can reach, which can cause compression of the bladder, rectum and/or nerves in the region.

5. Urinary changes

The growth of fibroids in the uterus can compress the bladder and cause symptoms such as increased urge to urinate and urinary incontinence.

6. Constipation

Constipation can be caused by compression of the rectum and the presence of fibroids that compress a segment of the large intestine, preventing the normal passage of feces.

7. Difficulty getting pregnant

The difficulty in getting pregnant is due to the presence of fibroids that penetrate the uterine cavity, preventing the correct implantation of the embryo in the uterus, interfering with the development of the pregnancy.

8. Increased abdomen size

In rare cases, fibroids can become very large, so that they can take up a lot of space in the uterine cavity and cause an enlarged abdomen.

Myoma symptoms in pregnancy

During pregnancy, the fibroid can increase in size due to the action of hormones during this period, in addition to there being a greater risk of torsion of the fibroid and miscarriage due to the difficulty of the embryo implanting in the uterine cavity.

Furthermore, fibroids during pregnancy increase the possibility of premature placental detachment, premature birth and incorrect position of the baby in the uterus, which can make vaginal birth difficult.

When to go to the doctor

The ideal is to have gynecological exams at least once a year. However, if you experience symptoms of increased menstrual flow, frequent cramps or menstrual bleeding outside of your period, pain during sexual intercourse or urgency to urinate, you should seek follow-up with your gynecologist for the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
