7 Tips to Prevent Yellow or Faded Blonde Hair

Beauty

We all know some beauty lessons: dirty makeup brushes can cause pimples, retinol and sun don’t mix, mascara can’t be worn for a long time and so many others…

But the correct care and maintenance of blonde hair cannot be particularly left aside. Why?

Because blonde hair is very difficult to care for.

One of the most common problems is the undesirable faded yellow blonde hair. Fortunately, you don’t need to have a PhD in chemistry to solve this.

But why is blonde hair so susceptible to bleaching? There are two main reasons. The first is that hair is rarely lightened to the desired tone. Instead, once hair is bleached, it needs to be treated with a toner to tone down the color right after dyeing.

The hair color is like leggings, and the toner is like tights. Since the toner applied is super light, it can come off easily, leaving an undesirable color on your strands. Unless you take care and treat them correctly.

The second reason: because blonde hair tends to be more porous, it ends up discoloring over time.
Which means that your hair is absorbing things that are ruining the dye, like water itself and hygiene and beauty products.

However, armed with the right knowledge and tools, you can prevent your blonde hair from turning yellow.

Invest in shower filters

Unless you are washing your hair with water without minerals – which would be strange and wasteful – these minerals and metals that are present in your shower water could be to blame for the discoloration.

Experts recommend investing in shower filters, as there are so many negative things in the water we use for showers, especially if it comes from old buildings with outdated plumbing.

Just like any other filter, the shower filter also needs to be changed regularly. But don’t worry: they screw in easily and work like most regular shower heads.

Be careful with pool water

If shower water can turn your blonde hair yellow, pool water can change the color of your strands completely – and you’re not free from that in salty sea water either.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to minimize this damage: wash your hair with clean water before entering and immediately after leaving the sea or pool.

Hair is like a sponge, if you wet it with clean water first, it won’t absorb as much water from the pool. So, the tip is to get wet in a shower before getting into the pool and apply some conditioner.

After swimming you will need to clean your blonde locks as soon as possible. Think to yourself: what is the function of chlorine? Clean the pool. This product can eat all the toner from your blonde hair and leave it yellow.

Reduce the frequency of washing

Hair turns yellow or faded due to several factors, but it all starts with how often you wash it. The more you wash your hair, the faster it will lose color, as using shampoo tends to deconstruct artificial pigments. Therefore, incorporate the use of dry shampoos into your life to avoid unnecessary washing.

If you can’t go a day without washing your hair, try washing it with just water and conditioner, which will make you feel fresh without using shampoo elements that take away the color of your blonde.

Moderation in the use of purple shampoo

Purple shampoo and conditioner can be sold everywhere, from supermarkets to beauty salons, but they still require some knowledge – and moderation!

If you overuse these products, instead of lightly toning your hair, you will end up promoting color distribution, which is much worse than anything in shower water and can leave your blonde hair gray and lifeless.

Experts recommend using conditioner or purple shampoo (never both!) just once a week, and only leaving it on for two or three minutes. Also remember to comb your hair throughout the process so that the products reach all of your hair evenly.

Sulfate free

You’ve probably heard the word “sulfate” dozens of times, but still don’t fully know why they’re not good for blonde hair. The answer is this: they are the detergents that create the little bubbles that we all played with when we were kids and the presence of foam is the only way that many of us think we are truly cleaning our hair, but you need something softer if you have color in your hair.

To prevent blonde strands from fading, choose a formula designed for color-treated hair and always check the label for the magic words “sulfate-free.”

Be careful with pharmacy products

The next warning comes in two parts: those who dye their hair an intense blonde (either very light, or with lots of highlights), end up with more porous strands. The solution is to tone down the color a little. But if you’re committed to your blonde tone, you can make up for it a little with the right products.

The second part is this: these whitening products commonly found at the drugstore could be causing discoloration. Products popular especially in the 90s and shampoos and conditioners that promise at-home lightening can cause your hair to turn colorless, or orange. These industrialized ingredients can conflict with the beautiful color that your hairdresser created exclusively for you.

hair gloss

If you’ve done all this and still have yellowish blonde hair, another tip is to apply hair gloss at least once a month. The gloss envelops the hair and closes the cuticle, preventing the color from weakening and stopping the hair from being affected by all environmental and external aggressors in our showers, swimming pools, etc…

A transparent or colored gloss protects your hair, adds shine, and can also tone your locks.
