What you do with your kitchen sponge before, during and after washing the dishes could be harming your health, did you know? Find out why:
Little things in our daily lives can help or hinder your health, even if you’re not aware of it, you know? The way we use or don’t use the kitchen sponge is a good example of this.
Although it seems too innocent and commonplace to warrant discussion, even the way you leave your kitchen sponge after washing the dishes can lead to serious consequences, such as poisoning. Can you believe?
But, as you will see in the article below, the problem is much bigger than we could imagine. Although everyone thinks they know how to clean everything properly, the truth is that even the product you put on the kitchen sponge can make it more or less harmful to your health.
For example, do you use bar soap, liquid soap or detergent to wash your dishes? Do you know, regardless of what you choose to use, which product is most recommended? This is also relevant information on the subject, even if we don’t pay much attention to this detail in our daily lives.
And so on. In the list below you will see how everyone needs to have a little more hygiene knowledge to keep their bodies healthy and their homes clean, without much effort, of course.
Check out 6 mistakes with the kitchen sponge that cause poisoning:
1. Use the same sponge for everything

It seems silly, but the apparently innocent act of washing the wooden board, contaminated with bacteria in its small grooves; and then washing the lunch dishes or even the glass from which you drank water already puts you at risk. This is because bacteria spread and, as a result, can cause diarrhea and even fever in the next person who uses these kitchen utensils.
2. Wash dishes with bar soap

Another mistake you make when using a kitchen sponge is washing dishes using soap, especially bar soap. Once again, bacteria are the villains and find bar soap a perfect environment to proliferate. The best thing to do is to only use detergent for this task.
And, if you want to make your detergent even more powerful, the secret is in this other article that we have already published here, in Área de Mulher.
3. Leave the sponge on the soap

And, if washing dishes using bar soap is wrong, imagine how harmful it can be to store a kitchen sponge, especially a wet one, on it? The best thing to do is to remove as much water as possible from the sponge and leave it to dry in a dry place, which allows the rest of the water to drain and not accumulate in the sponge again.
4. Not disinfecting the kitchen sponge

How often do you disinfect your kitchen sponge? If you found the question strange, this could be a sign that you are exposed to various poisonings and bacteria. You need to disinfect the kitchen sponge every day, leaving it in a container of boiling water for 3 minutes or immersing it, for 10 minutes, in a mixture with 2 tablespoons of bleach and 1 liter of water.
Another way to disinfect your sponge is using the microwave, as you have already seen here, in this other article.
5. Taking too long to replace the sponge

Do you know why packs of kitchen sponges usually come in four units? Because the right thing to do is replace your kitchen sponge with a new one every week. This prevents it from turning into a “bacteria nursery”, for example.
6. Reuse sponge

Who has never picked up an old kitchen sponge to wash the bathroom or help clean other rooms in the house? Although the practice is common and gives the impression that you are doing the right thing by reusing an object that would otherwise go to waste, the truth is that this practice is not recommended.
As we already explained at the beginning of the article, the kitchen sponge ends up accumulating a lot of bacteria and if the necessary care is not taken, you end up spreading all these microorganisms.
Did you see, what danger? But it’s not just the dishwashing sponge that you’re not using to its full potential, as you can see in the following post: 6 uses for detergent far beyond cleaning dishes.
