5 tips to combat postpartum hair loss

Beauty

Hair loss after pregnancy is normal and happens to practically all women, especially those who are breastfeeding. In general, hair loss can begin around 3 months after the birth of the baby and is the result of the intense hormonal changes that mark this phase of a woman’s life.

It is important that a dermatologist is consulted so that an assessment can be made of the scalp and the characteristics of hair loss so that appropriate treatment can be indicated to combat hair loss and promote healthy hair growth without interfering with breastfeeding.

Furthermore, a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals can also help reduce hair loss, and it is recommended to consume foods rich in protein, vitamin A, iron and zinc, for example.

To reduce postpartum hair loss, what you can do is:

1. Eat varied and nutritiously

Increasing the daily consumption of nutrients is the secret and therefore, women should have a healthy and balanced diet, constantly changing their menu. A good tip is not to use leftovers from lunch for dinner. This will make each meal different from the other, increasing the nutritional content of the meals.

You should invest in foods rich in:

  • Proteins such as eggs, meat, milk and yogurt;
  • Vitamin A like raw carrots and spinach;
  • Ferro such as beans, beets and parsley;
  • Zinc like Brazil nuts.

These foods, in addition to nourishing the woman and, consequently, the baby, promote hair growth and make them firmer and stronger. Find out which foods to strengthen your hair.

2. Take vitamins and fortified juices

Another option is to drink 2 glasses of fruit and vegetable juice daily, as it is a way of providing vitamins and minerals to the body to strengthen and grow hair. Good recipes to strengthen your hair are: 1 carrot + 1 apple + 1 spoon of ground chestnuts and 1 carrot with the juice of 2 oranges. It is also possible to prepare a smoothie with natural yogurt, papaya, avocado and 1 Brazil nut.

4. Only wash your hair 3 times a week

Avoiding washing and brushing your hair more than 3 times a week helps prevent hair loss. Furthermore, it is best to always use a wide comb to comb your hair and undo knots.

Hair loss stops naturally, you need to be patient and at this stage it is advisable to avoid using flat irons to straighten your hair or hair dryers, as well as perming or relaxing, even if you are not breastfeeding, as the hair strand is more fragile and brittle, requiring more care.

5. Taking medicine for hair loss

Sometimes, when hair loss is very severe and even leaves gaps in the middle of the hair, the dermatologist may recommend an iron supplement, because anemia common during pregnancy and postpartum also causes hair loss. Furthermore, the dermatologist may recommend the use of medicines, such as Pantogar, for example.
