4 decorating tips to make it look like a movie theater

House and garden

One of the best used spaces in the house is the TV room. To do this, we brought together a team of architects and interior designers to give tips on how to make the room comfortable and perfect for watching movies and series.

After all, who doesn’t like coming home after a long day of work or studying and relaxing by watching TV? Therefore, this appliance is almost an indispensable item in a living room.

How to set up a television room?

To answer this question, professionals from the offices of PB Arquitetura, Cristiane Schiavoni Arquitetura, Dantas & Passos Arquitetura and Patrícia Penna Arquitetura & Design de Interiores, selected the main tips that they implement in their projects.

1. Choose the right screen

As it is a space to relax, you need to know how to choose the right furniture and appliances. However, the choice goes far beyond a huge sofa and a giant screen.

“The room without a TV is more dedicated to socializing and gathering people and, therefore, highlights a lighter decor made up of sofas, benches and armchairs. The focus of the TV room is always the screen: therefore, our process consists of creating an environment designed with the idea of relaxation – from the arrangement of the layout, to the definition of the furniture used”, explains Priscila Tressino, from PB Arquitetura.

Therefore, the first step is to take measurements of the room. This way, it will be possible to calculate the distance between the sofa and the television. Furthermore, it is important that there is a good distribution of electrical points, equipment that contributes to acoustics and special lighting.

According to Priscila and her partner Bernardo, the television needs to be compatible and harmonious with the size of the environment, especially for visual convenience.

“There is no point in purchasing a huge device if the space is small. It is necessary to be compatible and respect a certain distance from other objects”, says Bernardo.

When choosing the height of the TV, make sure it will be in eye line, considering the height of a seated person. Therefore, it will be on average between 1.20m and 1.30m tall.

Furthermore, the minimum distance between the person and the appliance must be 1.5m and the greatest distance must be 2.5m. To know the exact perfect distance between the sofa and the TV, you need to do a simple calculation.

Therefore, professionals offer the following examples, considering that 1 inch is equivalent to 2.54cm:

  • (50*1.5) * 2.54 = 190.5cm or 1.90m – at minimum distance.
  • (50*2.5) * 2.54 = 317.5 or 3.17m – at maximum distance.

2. How to make a TV room more cozy?

Now that you know how to choose a TV, it’s time for the piece of furniture responsible for comfort: the sofa.

Although there are many options on the market, opting for a soft, deep sofa, which has room to stretch your legs, is the most popular choice.

“The more welcoming the better. In small rooms, retractable models work well for those who have a small room. The chaise version responds very well to wider proposals, which can be complemented by ottomans, used both for sitting and as support for the popcorn bucket”, advises architect Paula Passos, from Dantas & Passos Arquitetura.

Furthermore, it is important to highlight that sofas for the TV room and living room must be different. After all, in this case, it is best to invest in a pleasant texture and a high back that hugs the user.

“A firm sofa is not suitable for this purpose, but rather for environments designed for seating”, says Danielle, also an architect and Paula’s partner.

As for decoration, opt for a sober color that can be combined with other elements such as cushions, rugs, among others.

3. The structure of the TV

When planning the interior design of a TV room, one question is very common: where should it be fixed?

There are several ways to position it, however, the rack is the most used when the resident has a series of devices connected to the television.

In addition, there are also direct TV supports that are perfect for masonry and drywall structures. On the other hand, the panels are perfect for hiding the wiring without having to break the wall.

For those who live in small apartments or lofts, where the rooms are integrated, an interesting solution is to opt for swivel supports. After all, they optimize space, allowing one television to serve two types of environments.

4. Lighting in the TV room

Not being able to watch a night scene in a movie because of the reflection from the window is a terrible experience. Therefore, knowing how to control the lighting in the TV room is essential to guarantee a good time of leisure.

To achieve this, Yamamura developed some tips:

  • Opt for indirect light, that is, one in which the light is reflected and spread more lightly in the environment. The specialist recommends avoiding direct light, especially on the sofa, people, or in front of the TV, to avoid glare, reflections and discomfort;
  • Install lighting pieces on the sides of the walls, ceiling or floor, such as rails with directional spots, sconces and small pendants on the sides of sofas;
  • Use a warm white color temperature (from 2700K to 3000K) and lower intensity lamps to ensure greater visual comfort;
  • Make use of automation and dimming.

Furthermore, when planning lighting, take into account that the room can be used for more than one purpose.

“We should think about scenes with more intimate lighting, for moments of relaxation and referential guide lighting, which can be introduced through sconces and markers, similar to that found in conventional cinemas”, concludes Patrícia Penna.
