According to a study carried out by sleep specialist and former director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University in England, Jim Horne, women need more sleep than men.

This happens because they carry out more activities during the day. As female brains are more complex, capable of doing several things at the same time, prolonged sleep and rest, even for a few minutes, are essential to maintain good brain function throughout the day.

Horne explains that among the many functions of a good night’s sleep is to help the brain recover and self-repair.

Women need more sleep

According to Jim and his team, women need to sleep at least 20 minutes more than men. Of course, this time may vary more or less depending on each person’s lifestyle, but this is the average for the majority of women who participated in the study.

Jim explains that when we relax deeply while sleeping, the brain switches off the senses and goes into recovery mode. The cortex responsible for memory, thought and language undergoes regeneration.

The more intense and complex brain activity is, the more hours of sleep a person needs. In other words, the more the brain works, the more time it needs to recover.

Some men also “get into it”

But, apparently, this “advantage” is not restricted to women alone.

Men who perform complex tasks, such as decision-making and lateral thinking, also need more sleep than most people for this regenerative function to come into play properly.

Consequences of insufficient sleep

The study also revealed that the lack of a good night’s sleep among women is linked to several negative effects.

The level of psychological stress, for example, can increase greatly, along with feelings of hostility, depression and anger. All of these characteristics have been found in women who sleep poorly.

In the case of men who sleep poorly, on the other hand, these more drastic side effects were not detected. The most visible consequences, in this case, are the loss of ability to concentrate and the drop in performance due to physical and mental fatigue.
