Rich in history, cultural heritage, nature highlighted by the beaches and nightlife, this is Vila Velha, a city close to the state capital. Vila Velha does not deny its Espírito Santo roots. The traditions of the population stand out mainly for the local cuisine with the famous seafood pie and other delicacies deliciously prepared in clay pots. Tradition is also found in the historical legacy, so it is possible to delve deeper and learn about the history of the Railway Station at the Vale Museum, where you will find panels and photographs that bring back those times. The Nossa Senhora da Penha convent of classical architecture is one of the most visited places in the city and it is no wonder, in addition to the interior beauty, the chapel is located at the top of a 154 meter hill, thus allowing the contemplation of an incredible view.
Despite thriving in the most varied sectors of commerce, tourism is the main activity of residents who invest more and more in establishments, such as shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. This is precisely why nightlife is one of the region’s main attractions. The range of bars and restaurants is intense and of excellent quality, perfect for fun nights and enjoying traditional dishes.
During the day there is also hustle and bustle, especially at Praia da Costa, which is always crowded on its promenades, cycle paths and seaside kiosks. Surfers prefer to frequent Barra do Jucu, which has good waves for surfing. In the surrounding area there is a fishing village, a small church and lakes that allow for canoeing trips. Baleia, Itapoã and Itaparica beaches are also notable for their clear, refreshing waters and rich native forest.
To complete the tour, book in advance a visit to a chocolate factory located in the city. The tour is complete with the right to follow the production and tasting process. Simply irresistible.
Structured to receive visitors all year round, Vila Velha grew over the years. It is right next to the capital, connected to it by an easily accessible bridge, making it routine to migrate from one city to another smoothly.
In Vila Velha, beaches such as Praia da Costa stand out, the busiest in the region, with promenades, cycle paths, kiosks and spaces to practice sports. Praia do Jucu, Praia da Sereia and Praia da Baleia also compete in terms of beauty. Some trips to the railway museum, the interesting N. Senhora da Penha Convent and the Chocotour at the chocolate factory are also worth it.
Tours
Historical tours of the Railway Museum and the Nossa Senhora da Penha Convent are the city’s cultural attractions. The convent still serves as a viewpoint, as it is located at the top of a hill. It is also worth visiting a chocolate factory located in the city that shows the entire production process of its products, including tasting.
Railway Museum
Also known as the Vale Museum, it is located in the old Pedro Nolasco train station. The museum aims to retell the history of the railway through explanatory panels, photographs and old machines. Highlight is Maria Fumaça from 1945 which is located inside. It is on Carlos Lindemberg Highway.
Chocolate Factory
The Garoto chocolate factory is located in Vila Velha. Open to visitors, the place receives up to 400 people a day eager to learn about the production process of the delicious bars and chocolates. At the end of the tour, you can buy chocolates in the brand’s store.
Our Lady of Penha Convent
Located at the top of the hill is the Nossa Senhora da Penha Convent, which offers a panoramic view of the city. The chapel from 1562 protects the image of the state’s patron saint, which attracts many believers. The place also houses a religious museum and a store.
Penha Festival
After Easter Sunday, Vila Velha receives a huge number of visitors who arrive to participate in the third largest Catholic event in the country. This is the festival at the Nossa Senhora da Penha Convent, which focuses on the Pilgrimage of Men – a 14km walk of pilgrims to the convent. The party also features musical programs by artists.
The beaches of Vila Velha are permeated by preserved Atlantic forest, clear waters that invite athletes, surfers, bathers, tourists, residents, children and all types of people who want full contact with nature.

Whale Beach
The coarse sand beach is steep and full of reefs, which makes swimming a little dangerous. However, Lagoa Grande just behind is ideal for relaxing and safe bathing and is home to pedal boats and kayaks for rustic trips.
Barra do Jucu Beach
It is considered the most beautiful in the city. It is further away from the center and stands out for the Jucu River that flows into Praia da Barrinha. Two other small beaches are part of the Barra do Jucu complex: the busiest Barrão beach and Praia da Concha. All have rich native forest.
Mermaid Beach
This beach attracts attention and attracts families due to its calm waters. Due to these conditions, it is also suitable for kayaking.
Almost on northeastern soil, Vila Velha is sunny almost all year round.
Just avoid the months of October and December, which tend to rain more and make it more difficult to take trips outdoors or on the surrounding beaches.
