I returned from Chilean Patagonia enchanted! Not only for the destination itself but also for the hotel we stayed at, Tierra Patagonia. It certainly made all the difference to make this experience even more unforgettable. Located just 100 meters from the National Park Torres del Paine, Tierra has a super complete structure, delicious cuisine, an incredible view and is surrounded only by nature and wildlife. Luxury hotel in Chilean Patagonia

Tierra was built to not interfere with the local landscape, therefore, the architectural design, made entirely of wood and horizontally, fully integrates with nature. The hotel is located on the banks of Lake Sarmiento, a privileged observation point of the Paine Mountains, where the famous tower-shaped massifs that give the park its name are located. Around the area, we came across animals such as guanacos (a cousin of llamas), hares and ñandus, birds from the rhea family, which make the scene even more special.

How to get

From Santiago, we took a 3-hour flight to Punta Arenas, the capital of the Magallanes province, the southernmost in Chile. As soon as we arrived at the airport, the Tierra Patagonia van was already waiting for us! From there, another 4 hours to the hotel, with a stop on the way. I thought the little bag they left in the car with water, sandwich, chocolates and dried fruit was very thoughtful! It’s a long journey, but I guarantee it’s worth it!

However, in high season (between December and February, on Tuesdays and Saturdays), Puerto Natales airport opens and receives some flights from Santiago. The city is just 1 hour’s drive from the National Park, so it reduces travel time considerably!

Tierra Patagonia

As soon as we enter the hotel, we can see the large windows in the distance with a view of the Towers. In fact, the sophisticated and cozy decor has a lot of glass and wood, with objects that refer to local culture. The feeling we have is like being at a friend’s house! The reception is right at the entrance, next to a small shop, and just after a glass corridor, we arrive at the lobby area, with armchairs and sofas around a fireplace, the guides’ lecture room, the bar and the restaurant. Next door there is also a room with chairs hanging from the ceiling, super cute, and a TV room.

The hotel operates on an all-inclusive system, therefore, it includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, transfer, open bar (mineral water, soft drinks, juices, wines and house alcoholic drinks), two half-day excursions or a day excursion in the company of other guests daily, free Wi-Fi and use of common areas.

The rooms

There are 40 rooms, divided into Superior Apartment, Suite and Standard Apartment. All have views of the Torres del Paine, bathtub, hairdryer, safe and heating. I stayed in a Superior Apartment, which had a good amount of space and followed the same decor as the entire hotel, with light tones and lots of wood. In addition to the king bed, there was also an armchair and a bench in front of the window. Inside the cupboard, there are two glass bottles of water that are always replenished, and a complimentary Tierra thermos bottle.

Oh, and the rooms don’t have a TV, which I honestly didn’t miss, after all, there’s so much to do there that we arrived exhausted! The bathroom is also large, with two sinks, bathtub, bathrobe, slippers and separate shower and toilet.

The gastronomy

The restaurant’s atmosphere, like the others, has a stunning view of the mountains. Breakfast is served as a buffet, with a wide variety of juices, breads, granolas, cheeses and cold cuts, fruits and sweets. In addition, there is also a menu with hot options made to order, such as scrambled eggs, poche and waffles.

The lunch and dinner menu changes every day, with three starter and main options and six dessert options. Which is great, after all, we had dinner at the hotel every day. And the food is delicious! Tierra’s cuisine focuses on seafood from the Strait of Magellan, as well as lamb and beef from neighboring farms. There is also an alternative menu, with other suggestions for dishes, burgers and sandwiches.

The Spa

UMA Spa was one of my favorite places in Tierra Patagonia! The heated indoor pool was an invitation to relax after a day full of adventures and exploration. In addition, there was also a sauna, yoga classes and an external jacuzzi at 38ºC. There are more than 14 treatments for body and mind, focusing on local elements, such as, for example, massages with essences and hot stones, facial cleansing with a honey mask, clay or quartz crystals and baths with goat’s milk, roses, lavender or chocolate .

The activities

There are more than 30 tour options offered by the hotel, divided into three themes: Torres del Paine National Park, Flora and Fauna and Patagonian Life. Therefore, there is something for everyone, from light to heavier walks, or horseback riding and cycling. Everything is organized by them! As soon as you arrive, you meet the guide in the lecture room, where he explains everything about the region on a large map, tells you what the activity options are according to your interest, physical fitness, weather forecast… and Then you set your agenda! In the hotel lobby, there is a blackboard that is filled every day with all the details of the next day’s tours.

In fact, I need to highlight the excellent service provided by the entire Tierra team, from drivers and guides to the hotel staff, who are always very helpful, friendly and attentive. Whenever we returned from a trip, there would be a mini picnic set up waiting for us in the van, with snacks and drinks. Certainly always very welcome after hours of walking!

Sustainability

This is a very current and extremely important subject for Tierra! After all, the hotel uses LED lighting and controls its thermal efficiency to reduce energy costs, and supports reforestation projects in the National Park. Additionally, there is no plastic anywhere in the hotel. At the entrance, there are two drinking fountains so you can fill your thermos bottle before heading out for the ride. I thought it was brilliant 🙂

Furthermore, it is worth remembering that due to the low season, the hotel closes on May 31st and reopens in October. So, if I were you, I would start planning a trip to this luxury hotel in Chilean Patagonia! It will certainly surprise you.
