Promestriene is a medicine indicated for the treatment of vulvovaginal atrophy caused by a decrease or lack of estrogen in the body, or to accelerate the healing of injuries to the vagina and cervix after natural birth or after genital surgery.
This remedy works by promoting the gain of muscle tone by increasing local blood circulation, and is found in the form of a cream or vaginal capsule, as a generic or with the trade names Antrofi, Colpotrophine or Promim, for example.
Promestriene can be purchased in pharmacies or drugstores upon presentation of a medical prescription and must be used with the advice of a gynecologist.
What is it for
Promestriene is indicated for the treatment of:
- Vulvovaginal atrophy caused by a decrease or absence of estrogen;
- Healing of lesions in the vagina and/or cervix;
- Gynecological surgeries, after natural birth or after local treatments with physical agents.
The use of promestriene must be carried out with the advice of a gynecologist, with doses and for the duration of treatment recommended by the doctor according to the condition to be treated.
How to use
The way in which promestriene is used varies according to its presentation, which includes:
1. Promestrieno creme 10 mg/g
Promestriene 10 mg/g vaginal cream can be used intravaginally or externally in the vulva region.
The dosage of promestriene for adults is:
- Intravaginal application: apply 1 g of the cream (1 full vaginal applicator), once a day, for at least 20 days.
- Vulvar application: Cover the affected area of the vulva with the cream, massaging lightly, 1 or 2 times a day.
Treatment must be carried out for at least 20 days, as advised by the gynecologist.
2. Promestriene vaginal capsule
Promestriene can also be found in the form of a gelatinous capsule, which must be inserted into the vagina once a day, preferably at night, for around 20 days or according to medical advice.
The promestriene capsule should only be used inside the vaginal canal and should not be ingested orally or broken.

Possible side effects
Promestriene only has a local effect and, therefore, is not usually associated with adverse effects.
However, some women may report itching, a burning sensation and local redness, and it is important that the doctor is informed about the symptoms, as this way it is possible to assess the need to change or suspend treatment.
Who shouldn’t use
The use of promestriene is not recommended for people who are more sensitive to any component of the formula, as well as for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Furthermore, it is not indicated for women with a history or suspicion of breast or endometrial cancer, who have normal vaginal bleeding, who have thrombolytic changes and who have acute liver disease.
