Want to get busy on Instagram? Enjoy the Christmas lights! Photographer explains how to take professional-level photos.

If your house is decorated for the holidays, or if you love twinkle lights and place these little lights everywhere (at any time of year), this tip is for you. That’s because Christmas lights can create perfect, professional-looking photos, just the way your Instagram feed needed it, you know?

The person who revealed the very simple trick was Canadian photographer Irene Rudnyk. On her YouTube channel, during a short video lasting no more than 4 minutes, the professional showed how simple it is to create a different effect with Christmas lights, giving that very Tumblr effect.

How to create the effect?

The magic all starts with Christmas lights, or twinkle lights, being hung normally. The trick, however, is to position the lights in front of a window or door that offers natural light.

According to Irene, this is what will guarantee an interesting contrast in the image, as the light that comes from outside is colder and the light that comes from the blinker is yellower and warmer.

In the photos and video, which you can see at the end of this post, you can see how everything works simply, without any tricks. And the effect is so good that it looks like it was a studio shot or, at the very least, a photo edited in Photoshop.

See in the video how to use Christmas lights in photos:

Can it be done at home?

Of course, for the photos you are seeing, the photographer used more sophisticated equipment and not her cell phone camera. The cameras used, in fact, were a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 85 mm f/1.2 lens.

However, it doesn’t hurt to try the trick using your cell phone, don’t you think? We guarantee that an ugly photo won’t come out, although the effect of the Christmas lights should be a little different in this case.

So, what did you think? If, by any chance, you try the trick at home, be sure to tell us, okay?
