Peanut Butter Sandwich (1937) on Sandwiches of History⁣

You Tube

I have to admit, when I see a recipe with the name Peanut Butter Sandwich, I don’t expect there to be other ingredients involved. Yet, the folks at Household Searchlight Recipe Book of 1937 thought differently. No, they sought to combine peanut butter with both savory and sweet elements. And really, it ain’t that bad?

  1. I’d lose the bell pepper. It’s a very strong flavour. (I like it in appropriate places,) Maybe a Granny Smith in its place? Only plus up I can think of is to toast the bread.

  2. I genuinely feel like you need an outro sound that conveys confusion, both as a "huh, I'm surprised that worked" as well as a "I don't even know what to make of this but it ain't bad as such".

Oh, and as to plus-up, hear me out: a bit of cocoa powder. The only thing I'm not sure it'll vibe with is the celery.

  3. I can see how that would work. Everything you'd put on "ants on a log" plus bell pepper and Tabasco. Seems reasonable! But that being said, I would only think ants on a log could be plussed up with maybe some cinnamon?

  4. Walnuts and chipotle powder orrrrrr curried pecans! I feel this would add crunch, mestinesss, and a little bit of spice. Personally I’m voting curried pecans 🎉

  5. Spinach! This combination reminds me of some Moroccan recipes I've seen which also have spinach, sometimes chickpeas as well, but no one wants little marble-shaped peas falling out of their sandwich

  6. Soy sauce, sugar, msg, maybe vermicelli? Like a Thai spring roll. I'd suggest looking up a real Thai peanut sauce recipie and mixing the rest of the ingredients after cooling.

  7. I know a plus-up is usually something added after the fact, but if you're remaking it, I think leaning into the savory peanut butter could work and do something like a spicy peanut butter noodle: soy sauce or tamari, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, vinegar—that sort of thing

  8. This one sounds good.

I like Cajun seasoning or Old Bay on peanut butter! Also, I might switch out the green pepper with fresh jalapeno and skip the hot sauce.

  9. The commentors with notifcations on: "Oh wow! I can take a swing at a plus-up?? Here's this super awesome, slightly obscure ingredient that will bring this crazy sandwich together!"

Me, a Cro-Magnon who sees this video the day after: "Put Ham On It."

  10. Ok as someone who really doesn't like celery and can't stand green bell pepper (Even though I'll eat jalapenos by the bushel) this sandwich sounds like torture to me lol Mayo and peanut butter are great in sandwiches but maybe not the same sandwich haha

  11. Butter on white bread? Mebbe. Raisins and celery OK. Momma made PB sammiches on Roman Meal bread. No butter. It was mostly JIF or Peter Pan with Welches Grape jelly. That was OK. But really gave a huge taste hit if eaten with OJ. No coffee for me until I was 18.
