Orchiepididymitis: what it is, symptoms, causes and treatment

Men's Health

Orchiepididymitis is a relatively common inflammation of the testicles and epididymis, which is a small canal that collects and stores sperm.

This type of inflammation usually occurs as a complication of other infections that affect the genital region, especially mumps. However, urinary infections and sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can also cause epididymitis orchiditis.

When symptoms appear that may indicate epididymitis orchiditis, or another problem with the testicles, such as swelling, pain and redness in the testicles, a urologist should be consulted to evaluate the symptoms, identify the cause and initiate the most appropriate treatment.

Main symptoms

The main symptoms of orchiepididymitis are:

  • Pain and swelling in the testicles;
  • Redness and sensation of heat in the scrotum;
  • Fever;
  • Pain when urinating.

When signs appear that may indicate epididymitis orchiditis, it is important to consult a urologist to assess the symptoms and initiate the most appropriate treatment.

How to confirm the diagnosis

The diagnosis of orchiepididymitis is normally made by a urologist through evaluation of symptoms and palpation of the testicles. In addition, the doctor may also order blood and urine tests, as well as imaging tests, such as an ultrasound of the pelvic region, to check if there are any changes in the testicle or epididymis.

Possible causes

Orchiepididymitis usually appears as a complication of another infection that affects the genital region, such as:

  • Mumps;
  • Urinary infection;
  • Sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea.

This happens because the viruses or bacteria that cause these infections are able to travel to the testicles, causing the inflammation characteristic of orchiepididymitis.

How the treatment is carried out

The treatment of epididymitis orchiditis must be indicated by a urologist and normally varies according to the cause of the inflammation, and may include the use of antibiotics, analgesics or anti-inflammatories, which help to reduce symptoms.

Furthermore, it is recommended to use a device that holds the scrotum, known as a scrotal athletic support, which prevents the testicles from moving, reducing pain. Applying ice packs, as advised by your doctor, can also help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
