Micropenis: what it is, size, why it happens and treatment

Men's Health

Micropenis is a rare condition in which a boy is born with a penis that is less than 2.5 standard deviations (SD) below the average for his age or stage of sexual development and affects 1 in every 200 boys. In these cases, the testicles are considered a normal size and the penis also functions normally, with only its size being different.

Although it does not cause any type of health problem, micropenis is generally a situation that causes a lot of anxiety in boys, especially during adolescence and adulthood, and it may be necessary to consult a psychologist.

Still, in many cases, men can have a satisfactory sex life and, therefore, do not need any type of medical treatment. However, in cases of infertility or embarrassment, some treatments with hormones or surgery are available to try to increase the size of the penis, in addition to follow-up with a multidisciplinary team including an endocrinologist, psychologist and urologist.

Why it happens

Although genetic mutations may be the cause of micropenis, most cases occur due to a marked decrease in testosterone production during the second and third trimester of pregnancy.

Testosterone is the most important hormone for the sexual development of boys and, therefore, when it is lacking, the penis cannot develop correctly, becoming smaller than normal.

Treatment options

One of the first options for treating micropenis is injections with testosterone, especially when testosterone levels are low in the body. This type of treatment can be started during childhood or adolescence and, some boys, may even be able to obtain a penis of a size considered normal.

However, when treatment does not produce results, the doctor may recommend supplementation with another type of growth hormones.

When treatment is sought only during adulthood, the use of testosterone and hormones may not have the expected results and, therefore, reconstruction and penis enlargement surgery may be advised, for example.

In addition, there are also exercises and vacuum pumps that promise to increase the size of the penis, however, the result is usually not as expected, having little impact on the visual appearance of the penis. Find out more about the ways there are to enlarge your penis.

How to improve intimate contact

Intimate contact with the micropenis can bring the same amount of pleasure as intercourse with a penis of a normal size. To do this, men must also focus their attention on other forms of pleasure such as oral sex and the use of hands or sex toys, for example.

Some of the best sexual positions to enhance pleasure in these cases are:

  • Spooning: in this position penetration is done with the other person lying on their side with their legs closed and slightly bent, as in the fetal position. This position helps create more friction during penetration which can increase pleasure. Furthermore, the man’s hands are free to stimulate other areas of the body;
  • 4 supports: this position allows the penis to penetrate deeper, optimizing its size;
  • Another person sitting on top: this position, as well as the one with 4 supports, also helps the penetration to be deeper.

Furthermore, it is very important to talk to your partner before the relationship, so that both can feel comfortable and seek solutions that help to obtain mutual pleasure.
