Male fertility test: what it is, how to do it and results

Intimate Life

The male fertility test serves to check whether the quantity of sperm per milliliter of sperm is within levels considered normal, allowing to determine whether the man has a sufficient number of sperm to be considered fertile.

Fertility tests are easy to use, can be done at home and are available in pharmacies and drugstores, under the names Confirme and Fast Test, for example. Learn about other types of fertility tests.

However, evaluating the quantity of sperm is not the only parameter that must be evaluated to check whether the man is fertile or not, and a urologist must be consulted so that a more complete evaluation can be carried out.

How is the preparation

To take the fertility test, a man must remain sexually abstinent for a period of at least 48 hours and a maximum of 7 days. If the abstinence period is less than 48 hours or more than 7 days, it is not recommended to take the test, as there may be changes in sperm count.

How to take the test

To carry out the test, the following steps must be followed:

  1. Collect the sperm in a collection bottle. You must wait at least 48 hours since the last ejaculation to collect the sample, not exceeding 7 days;
  2. Let the sample rest in the collection bottle for 20 minutes;
  3. Shake the bottle gently, in a circular direction, 10 times;
  4. Dip the pipette tip into the bottle, collecting sample up to the first mark;
  5. Transfer the sample to the vial containing the diluent;
  6. Cover the bottle, gently homogenize the solution and let it rest for 2 minutes;
  7. Add two drops of the previous mixture to the test device (which must be positioned horizontally), avoiding the formation of bubbles.
  8. Wait 5 to 10 minutes until the result is obtained.

After this period of time, the result will appear. If only one line appears, it means that the result is negative, if two lines appear, the result is positive, which means that for each milliliter of sperm, more than 15 million sperm are present, which is the minimum quantity of a man considered fertile.

Is the male fertility test reliable?

The result of the male fertility test is 98% effective, being considered safe and reliable for identifying the quantity of sperm present in the semen sample. However, this test cannot be used as the only factor to assess male fertility, as there are other factors that can interfere with a man’s reproductive capacity.

What does the result mean

The results that may appear are:

  • Negative, when a lower than normal number of sperm is found, it is advisable to consult a doctor to carry out other tests and, if necessary, carry out fertility treatments. Check out the main causes of male infertility;
  • Positivewhen more than 15 million sperm are identified per milliliter of sperm, indicating that the man is potentially fertile.

It is important that the couple knows that this is not the only indicator of male fertility and that, therefore, even if the result obtained is positive, there may be other factors that end up making pregnancy difficult, and it is important to consult a urologist, to be sure. more tests were carried out.
