Koplik spots: what they are, when they appear and treatment

Illnesses

Koplik’s spots, or Koplik’s sign, are small red dots with a white center, similar to grains of sand, which can appear on the inside of the cheek or on the roof of the mouth in some people.

These spots do not cause pain and indicate an infection with the measles virus, usually appearing 1 to 2 days before the red spots on the body typical of measles.

Koplik spots help in diagnosing Measles, but do not require treatment. This is because these spots disappear naturally about 2 days after the measles spots appear.

When Koplik spots appear

The appearance of Koplik spots is indicative of infection with the measles virus and usually appears about 1 to 2 days before the appearance of the red spots typical of measles, which begin on the face and behind the ears and then spread throughout the body. See how to identify other signs and symptoms of measles.

After measles spots appear, Koplik’s sign disappears in about 2 to 3 days. Therefore, Koplik’s sign can be considered a characteristic and temporary symptom of measles.

What to do

There is no specific treatment for Koplik spots, as they disappear naturally as the measles spots appear and the infection is fought by the immune system.

However, it is possible to speed up the process of eliminating the virus by drinking plenty of fluids, resting and eating a balanced, healthy diet, as these strengthen the immune system and stimulate the elimination of the virus. Furthermore, children should be evaluated and the use of vitamin A supplements recommended, as it reduces the risk of mortality and prevents complications.

How to avoid Koplik spots

To avoid measles and, consequently, the appearance of Koplik spots, it is recommended to take the measles vaccine. The vaccine is recommended in two doses, the first being administered when the baby turns 12 months and the second at 15 months.

The vaccine is also available free of charge for adults in one or two doses depending on their age and whether they have already had a dose of the vaccine. Check out more details about the measles vaccine.
