How to wash your nose for sinusitis (with a syringe or dropper)

Illnesses

Nasal washing for sinusitis is an excellent home remedy to help with the treatment, as it helps to make the secretions accumulated on the face more fluid and thus promote their elimination, relieving the symptoms and discomfort of sinusitis.

Furthermore, nasal washing is capable of promoting the dilation of the nasal canals, helping secretions to come out more easily, leaving the airways free, reducing pain and discomfort. If nasal washing is done after nebulization for sinusitis, the results will be even better.

It is important that, in addition to nasal washing, the person follows the sinusitis treatment according to the doctor’s instructions, which may indicate the use of antibiotics, analgesics, anti-inflammatories and/or corticosteroids. Find out how sinusitis is treated.

How to wash your nose

Nasal washing can be done using a dropper, using a solution that can be prepared at home, or a syringe. The way in which nasal washing is performed may vary according to the method, however, in general, after placing the solution in the dropper or syringe, the person should tilt their head slightly back and/or to one side and apply the solution.

Nasal washing can be done 2 to 3 times a day during a sinusitis symptom attack, and can also be performed after nebulization. See more details on how nasal washing is done.

1. Nasal wash with dropper

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda;
  • 2 teaspoons of sea salt;
  • 250 ml of warm boiled water.

Preparation mode

Mix all the ingredients until you obtain a homogeneous solution and keep it stored in a glass container, tightly covered.

Using a dropper, drip 2 to 3 drops of this saline solution into each nostril and turn your head back a little, letting the liquid penetrate the nose and reach the throat.

2. Nasal wash with syringe

Nasal washing with a syringe helps to remove excess secretions inside the nasal sinuses and also eliminates possible dirt that is inside the nose, aggravating symptoms.

Ingredients

  • 100 ml of saline or mineral water with salt;
  • 1 clean syringe (3 ml).

How to make

Draw the serum or mineral water mixture into the syringe. Then, tilt your head slightly to one side and insert the tip of the syringe into the nostril above. For example, if the head is tilted to the left side, place the tip of the syringe inside the right nostril.

Squeeze the syringe plunger until water starts to enter the nostril. Adjust the tilt of your head until the serum starts to come out of the other nostril. In some cases, the serum may accumulate inside the sinuses before exiting, which may cause slight discomfort on the face.

After washing, blow your nose to remove excess secretions and repeat in the other nostril.
