When was the last time you took a good look at your feet? Although these are often neglected parts of our body, the truth is that giving a little attention to the limbs that support us all day long can prevent a series of concerns and discomforts, such as bunions.

This is because, although impossible to go unnoticed when they are already present and deform our feet, bunions can be treated from the first symptoms, which can prevent them from developing to more dramatic stages.

What are bunions?

But, before we talk about what you can do at home to alleviate bunions and alleviate the pain caused by them, let’s first explain what they are about.

For those who don’t know, bunions are a chronic problem, which causes bone swelling in the joint at the base of the big toe and little toe.

This is a problem that affects almost 2 million Brazilians, according to data from Hospital Israelita A. Einstein; and is formed when the big toe pushes the next toe, whether due to tight shoes worn daily, due to arthritis, the tendons of the feet themselves, among other causes.

What do they cause?

In addition to the physical deformation it causes to the feet, which are not pretty, in fact, bunions need to be treated as soon as possible to avoid the characteristic pain. The treatment also prevents the condition from developing into bursitis, an inflammatory process that causes intense pain in this region.

Of course, you need to see a doctor to diagnose the problem and prescribe the correct treatment, but some actions can be taken at home to improve your bunions, especially if you are in pain. Below, for example, we list some simple and cheap tips for you to put into practice.

Discover 4 ways to take care of bunions at home:

1. Shoes and food

One of the main causes for the appearance of bunions is genetic predisposition, in addition to other aggravating factors, such as problems with the tendons of the feet, arthritis and so on.

Frequently wearing high, tight and, especially, thin shoes at the front helps a lot with the appearance of this inflammation, especially if this is a family problem.

Excess weight and some types of foods that stimulate inflammatory processes in the joints can also worsen the condition. Therefore, take care of your diet, avoid fatty foods, such as fried foods; in addition to spicy foods or foods with excess sugar.

2. Massages and relaxation

In addition to helping you release stress and relax, massage can be a good remedy for bunions by strengthening the muscles in your feet.

And while it’s wonderful if you have someone who can do this for you, daily self-massage can also really help. Therefore, follow these tips:

  • Tennis balls or special massage balls can help. Rotate the ball on the floor with your feet a few times.
  • With your thumb, massage your feet from top to bottom, pressing lightly.
  • Place your fingers between your toes, spreading them apart and moving them up, down and back.
  • Hold one of your toes and stretch it upwards slightly. Do the same thing with all the other toes.
  • Walk barefoot in the sand. This works as a great foot massage.

3. Exercises against bunions

You can implement a very simple series of exercises into your routine that promise to alleviate pain and gradually correct bunions. To do this, you just need to set aside 10 minutes of your day to follow the instructions below:

  • Firm your foot on the floor and try to lift each toe separately.
  • Attach an elastic band (the kind used to hold money or even those used in your hair) around your fingers, passing from the big toe to the little toe. Now try to overcome the pressure and separate your fingers as much as possible.
  • Rotate your feet to different sides.
  • Use your feet as hooks, trying to pick up pens, marbles, boxes and other small objects from the floor using just your toes to “grab” them. This exercises your muscles a lot.

4. Foot bath

Taking care of your feet by making infusions with anti-inflammatory herbs is also a great way to relax and take care of bunions. Once the water reaches an acceptable temperature, soak your feet for a few minutes.

Herbs such as chamomile, calendula or lavender, for example, are great for relieving fatigue, as well as reducing sweating and harmful bacteria.
