How to know your face shape (and how to flatter it)

Beauty

To find out the shape of your face, you must tie your hair up and photograph your face. Then, looking at the photo, one must imagine two lines that divide the face: one vertically, which divides the face into “left” and “right” halves, and another horizontally, which divides the face into “top” and “low”.

Another way to analyze your face shape is to tie your hair up and stand in front of a mirror, in a well-lit place. After that, using lipstick, makeup pencil, chalk, or even a whiteboard pen, you should draw the contour of your face in the mirror, without including your ears, remaining as still as possible and without tilting your head to forward.

There are 6 main face shapes: round, square, oval, heart, rectangular and diamond.

1. Round face

In this type of face, the vertical and horizontal lines are the same size. Furthermore, this type of face does not have straight limits, with its angles being poorly defined and very rounded.

This type of face is often confused with the oval type, however in a round face, the forehead is smaller and the distance between the bottom of the nose and the chin is smaller than the length of the entire nose.

  • Most recommended glasses:

When choosing sunglasses or prescription glasses, for this type of face you should avoid glasses with rounded lines that further accentuate the lines of the face. The ideal is to opt for glasses with straight lines, with rectangular and square models being the most suitable.

You should prefer a medium to long haircut that slightly covers your cheekbones. If a person likes to wear bangs, they should avoid straight cuts and prefer diagonal cuts.

2. Square face

In a square face type, the vertical and horizontal lines of the face also have the same dimensions, as in a round face, with the big difference being that the limits of the face are straighter and more intense.

  • Most recommended glasses:

When choosing sunglasses or prescription glasses, it is recommended to opt for an aviator or cat eye shape, as these are shapes that soften the straight lines characteristic of this type of face.

More asymmetrical haircuts with volume should be preferred. Short hair also flatters this face shape.

3. Oval face

In an oval face, what happens is that the vertical line is approximately ⅓ larger than the horizontal line, making it a slightly elongated face type when compared to the previous ones. This type of face does not have any angle that stands out.

  • Most recommended glasses:

On these face types, both rounded and straight glasses look good. The most important rule is to get the size of your glasses right, which should be neither too big nor too small, respecting the limits of your face.

You can opt for more asymmetrical cuts with movement. Straight bangs also favor this type of face, because it gives the illusion that the face has reduced its length.

4. Heart face

In the heart face, the vertical line is larger than the horizontal line, with the chin having a more pointed appearance. In this type of face, the forehead and cheekbones are wide, with similar widths, and the jaw lines are long and straight, tapering until they reach the chin.

This type of face is often associated with an inverted triangle, where the chin is the tip of the triangle.

  • Most recommended glasses:

When it is necessary to choose prescription or dark glasses, for this type of face, round glasses or glasses with rounded sides are recommended, with the aviator model being the most suitable.

This face shape is valued with medium haircuts and volume. Bangs also flatter the face because it makes the forehead less long.

5. Oblong or rectangular face

In the oblong (also known as rectangular) face type, the vertical line is almost double the horizontal line, and the entire face resembles a vertical rectangle. In this type of face, the side lines are straight and well defined, as are the jaw lines, as is the case with a square face.

The big difference in this type of face is that the jaw has a slight curvature, which makes it less pronounced and less square. Another important characteristic is that the forehead tends to be the same width as the jaw, which gives a rectangular appearance to this type of face.

  • Most recommended glasses:

As with a square face, you should opt for aviator or cat-eye shaped glasses, as these are shapes that help soften the natural straight lines characteristic of this type of face.

Just like for a square face, the haircut should be asymmetrical and have movement. Bangs can help reduce the size of your forehead.

6. Diamond face

In the diamond-shaped face, the vertical line is larger than the horizontal line, and as in the heart-shaped face, the chin is highlighted, having a pointed appearance.

The big difference in this type of face is that the widest region is the cheekbones, with the forehead and hairline being narrower (contrary to what happens in a heart-shaped face), along with a thin, pointed chin. . Furthermore, the jaw lines are long and straight, tapering slightly until reaching the chin.

  • Most recommended glasses:

To choose glasses that match this type of face, it is recommended to choose round glasses, with rounded sides or oval bottoms.

The recommended cut for this face shape is the buzz cut, which adds volume and helps to disguise the protrusion of the face. Furthermore, straight-cut bangs also favor these face types.
