Henna tattoo causes permanent scars on 7-year-old girl

Health

The girl got the henna tattoo during the holidays and got chemical burns and a huge scar for the rest of her life:

You know those henna tattoos that almost everyone has done once in their life? Well, despite it seeming like an innocent thing, a painting like this, made with black henna, left lifelong scars on the arm of little British girl Madison Gulliver, just 7 years old.

The girl was on vacation in Egypt with her family and got the henna tattoo in the lounge of the upscale hotel where they were staying in the city of Hurghada.

According to Madison’s father, Martin, the allergic reaction only appeared after a few days, when they were back in the United Kingdom, when his daughter’s arm began to itch and break out into blisters where the tattoo was.

Permanent scars

As soon as the henna tattoo began to burn, her parents took Madison to Salisbury District Hospital, which specializes in burns. Doctors cut the blisters and sent the girl to the scar management unit for treatment to alleviate the injuries.

And, although the little one is doing well, she will undergo a long treatment to alleviate the injuries. She will also need to wear a pressure bandage for at least 6 months to help lighten the scars, although they will not be completely erased.

Chemical burns

The parents say that the specialists who treated little Madison were shocked to discover the high pH level in the girl’s blisters, indicating a serious chemical burn.

Although the parents didn’t know this when they allowed their daughter to get a henna tattoo, the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) warns that black henna can contain high levels of toxic chemical dye and may contain paraphenylenediamine ( PPD), the substance that most causes allergies in hair dyes, for example.

Hotel x henna tattoo

Regarding the hotel, the parents contacted the management and complained about there not being any type of warning regarding the reactions that henna can cause. At first, the response from those responsible for the salon was that the problem had nothing to do with the paint, but with the girl’s skin.

The hotel later reconsidered and sent an email to Madison’s parents informing them that they no longer offered henna tattoos and apologizing for the inconvenience. Below, you can see, in full, what the hotel manager, Heike Moursy, wrote to guests:

“On behalf of the owner of the Beauty Center, we apologize again regarding what happened to his daughter. We do not wish that in the future there would be such horrible reactions towards anyone again. Therefore, our general manager, Mr. Max Shoukry, spoke to the beauty center owner to suspend offering any henna tattoos. We know this doesn’t help your daughter, but we hope she gets well soon.”
