Height calculator: how tall will your child be?

Health

Knowing how tall their children will be in adulthood is a curiosity that many parents have. Height prediction is based on the height of the father and mother and the child’s gender, however some factors can influence growth, such as type of diet, genetics, chronic diseases, sleep pattern and quality and physical activity.

Thus, height prediction is just a reference measurement, so that a person can be more or less tall in adulthood.

Enter the following data to find out the estimated height of your son or daughter as an adult:

How is estimated height calculated?

This calculator was created based on the “family target height” formulas, where, knowing the height of the father and mother, it is possible to calculate the child’s estimated height for adulthood, according to gender:

  • For girls: To the mother’s height (in cm) the father’s height (in cm) minus 13 cm is added. Finally, this value is divided by two;
  • For boys: the father’s height (in cm) plus 13 cm is added to the mother’s height (in cm) and, in the end, this value is divided by 2.

Since there are several factors that can affect the way and pace at which each child grows, the estimated height value is given in the form of a range of values, which considers a variation of + or – 5 cm on the value obtained. in the calculation.

For example: in the case of a girl who has a mother who is 160 cm and a father who is 173 cm, the calculation must be 160 + (173-13)/2, which results in 160 cm. This means that in adulthood the girl’s height should be 155 to 165 cm.

Is the calculator result reliable?

The formula used to calculate the estimated height is based on a standard average that aims to represent the majority of cases. However, as there are several factors that can influence a child’s growth and that cannot be calculated, it is possible that, in the end, the child ends up having a height different from that calculated.

What can interfere with the estimated height?

Although there are averages for what a child’s growth should be, there are also several factors that can influence development. For this reason, it is important to take into account factors such as:

  • Type of food;
  • Chronic diseases;
  • Sleep pattern;
  • Practice physical exercise.

Each child’s genetics is another very important factor and it is for this reason that the “family target height” formulas are used.

What is the child’s growth rate?

Most children have a similar growth rate:

Until the age of 10, both boys and girls have a very similar growth rate.

However, between the ages of 10 and 13, girls have a greater growth spurt, but after this age the growth spurt is complete and after menarche, they do not add more than 5 cm to their height.

Boys’ growth spurt occurs after the age of 14 and they continue to grow until they are around 20 years old.
