I complained the other day that the hot dog buns we find around are always doughy or old, the same goes for hamburger buns. I wanted a smaller loaf, so I decided to try making it at home.
I found it difficult to shape the hot dog bun because this dough is very delicate, so I just made the hamburger bun, but the dough works for both. The result was very good, but of course, it’s homemade bread, so it wasn’t aesthetically perfect like purchased bread, but it was very tasty!!!
Ingredients (I used a 200ml measuring cup)
- 1 cup of warm milk (it can’t be too hot, just warm).
- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 ovo
- 1 heaped tablespoon of butter at room temperature (soft like ointment)
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated dry yeast (suitable for breads)
- 4 to 6 cups of wheat flour
Mix all the ingredients and add the flour little by little. Mix well until it starts to come off your hands. I used 4 cups, but you can use more or less than that.
This dough should not be too dry, it will become soft and sticky otherwise the bread will be heavy. Sprinkle some flour on a smooth surface and place the dough on it. Knead for 10 minutes.
Place the dough in a bowl, cover with a damp kitchen towel and keep in a warm place until it doubles in volume. I put it in the microwave or oven (turned off ok?). I let it rest for 45 minutes. After this time, turn the dough back onto a floured surface and remove the air from it by kneading a little more.
Make polka dots or whatever shape you want. Place the balls on a floured baking sheet leaving space between them.
Cover again with the damp kitchen towel and return to the warm place to finish rising. Another 45 minutes (oh how lazy!!!).
Now preheat the oven to 180º, brush on egg yolk (optional), sprinkle sesame if you want and bake. In my oven it took 35 minutes but this time can vary a lot more or less depending on your oven, keep an eye on it, when it is the color of a hamburger bun it is ready! They yielded 18 buns smaller than those bought.
