House and garden

If you are thinking about the landscaping project for your home, this must definitely include a garden, right? And, as in any garden, grass is essential to create the environment and “cover” the ground. Therefore, it is normal for several doubts to arise regarding this topic.

After all, how to choose between different types of grass? What are the prices? Furthermore, it is important to see photos of the options to assess which best suits your area. To help us with all the information, architect and landscaper Cezar Scarpato, from Scarpato Arquitetura Paisagística, gave several tips.

Keep reading and check out the answers to all these questions. So, don’t forget to save your favorite photos!

Types of grass

The ground cover with grass allows residents a space for contact with nature. Furthermore, it is perfect for harmonizing with other types of plants and trees.

However, when buying grass, you will come across different types that vary in characteristics and needs.

“Choosing the correct species can influence the beauty and maintenance of the garden or outdoor area. In addition to the aesthetics related to the tone of green and size of the leaves, the amount of sun, watering, frequency of cutting and care that each one requires are factors that help in this decision”explains the architect.

Therefore, we have brought the best-known species of grass with a description of their characteristics that will help you choose the perfect type, there are three: Esmeralda, Santo Agostinho and São Carlos.

“They must be chosen according to the location where they will be planted, adapting well to the soil and climate. It is also valuable to understand whether the lawn will be decorative or will receive many activities on it, such as sports.”alerts Scarpato.

Emerald Grass

Firstly, we brought the most used grass in Brazil: Esmeralda. This is because it is resistant to dry and hot climates. Furthermore, it is easy to care for and preserve.

“Its leaves are thin and narrow, in the shade of green that gives it its name”says the landscaper.

The resistance of this species makes it the most sought after when the project has a passage through the middle of the garden. As a result, even if it is trampled on, it will still look good.

São Carlos Grass

On the other hand, São Carlos grass is perfect for climates that vary in very low or very high temperatures. Furthermore, the shape and texture are great attractions of this species. After all, its leaves are wide and smooth.

Just like Esmeralda grass, São Carlos can also be trampled and is recommended in spaces where there is frequent sports practice.

However, the professional warns that there is a disadvantage that needs to be taken into consideration:

“Its growth is fast, so it is necessary to prune at least twice a month”.

St. Augustine Grass

Finally, for those who prefer a darker green for decoration, they will definitely prefer St. Augustine grass.

Also known as English grass, this species has smooth leaves in a dark, slightly bluish shade of green.

“It is simple to maintain, as it grows slowly, but requires more regulated watering. It is perfect for coastal areas, as it resists soil salinity”indicates the architect.

It is worth noting that these last two types of grass are tolerant in areas that only get sun for part of the day.

How much does grass cost?

Firstly, it is important to point out that the prices that will be presented below may change depending on the region of the country.

Furthermore, before you go searching for stores to buy grass for your garden, you need to know exactly how many square meters you want to cover. After all, this is the measure they use to sell.

Another important point is that installing grass is not as simple as it seems. Therefore, it is essential to hire an experienced professional. Otherwise, you could lose the entire plant you purchased.

Now, let’s get to the point: the prices.

  • Esmeralda: R$ 5,95 a R$ 7,50/m²
  • São Carlos: R$8.50 to R$10.50/m²
  • Santo Agostinho: R$9.00 to R$11.50/m²
  • Daily rate for a professional to plant the grass: R$200

Prices were taken from the Agro Gramas website.

All types of grass are easily found in stores specializing in landscaping and gardens and also in online stores.

Which is the cheapest?

As we saw above, Esmeralda grass is the cheapest on the market. However, before purchasing it, check whether the characteristics and type of maintenance fit your reality.

Another tip when buying grass for your garden is to choose grass that has a quality certificate. This means that they comply with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Terms of Compliance.

Tips for keeping the grass always green

Three types of path in the grass.
To protect the grass, including paved paths can be a solution – as Cezar Scarpato did in his projects

Now that you’ve chosen the right type of grass for your home, it’s time to learn about the care it needs to ensure it always looks attractive.

1. Firstly, be aware of the ideal amount of watering and sun the chosen species needs;

2. Drainable soil makes all the difference when installing. Therefore, fertilize the land before and after the grass has settled.

“Covering the lawn with mixed soil and powdered fertilizer helps to supplement nutrients for a long period after planting. It can be carried out at the end of the dry or winter season, before the rain and heat”explains Cezar Scarpato.

3. Regular pruning is essential to avoid the appearance of pests or holes;

4. If you can, prevent the area from being trampled on. As a result, growth will be uniform.

“In passing places, it is possible to create paved paths, whether with loose steps, concrete floors, draining floors or pebbles and gravel”concludes the architect and landscaper.
