Glucose sclerotherapy: what it is, how it is done and side effects

Illnesses

Glucose sclerotherapy is a treatment indicated to combat varicose veins and microvaricose veins that can appear on the legs and consists of applying an injection containing a hypertonic 50 or 75% glucose solution.

Glucose is a natural substance and is more easily absorbed by the body, reducing the chances of complications or allergies during or after the procedure, which means that this technique is increasingly sought after.

Therefore, by applying the glucose solution directly to the vein, it is possible to promote its disappearance. Due to the fact that it is a procedure in which small injections are performed, glucose sclerotherapy can be considered a little painful, however it is quite effective, and it is important that it is carried out by a vascular surgeon in a suitable environment.

How it is made

Glucose sclerotherapy is performed by administering a hypertonic 50 or 75% glucose solution directly into the varicose vein, which is absorbed by the body, favoring the disappearance of glucose due to circulation stimulation. See more details about how sclerotherapy is done.

Although there are no complications associated with this technique, glucose sclerotherapy is not recommended for diabetics, as the glucose will be injected directly into the bloodstream, which can alter glycemic levels. In this case, chemical, laser or foam sclerotherapy is indicated.

Possible side effects

After applying glucose, some side effects may appear that disappear after a few days, such as:

  • Bruises at the application site;
  • Dark spots in the treated area;
  • Swelling;
  • Formation of small bubbles at the site.

If symptoms persist even after complete completion of treatment, it is recommended to return to the doctor.

Care after glucose sclerotherapy

Despite being a very effective technique, care must be taken after carrying out the procedure to avoid the appearance of new varicose veins and spots in the area. Therefore, it is important to wear elastic compression socks, like Kendall, after the procedure, avoid sun exposure, avoid wearing high heels daily, as they can compromise circulation and maintain healthy habits.
