Europe

If you have plans to go to Lisbon, take note of this tip: Fire! Led by renowned chef Alexandre Silva (who won a Michelin star with his restaurant Loco), all dishes are cooked over grill, that is, they are cooked through fire. Even the desserts! Inspired by his Portuguese roots, the chef prioritizes local ingredients with classic techniques. Furthermore, the atmosphere is modern and elegant, the service is attentive and the drinks are great! So, check out below what my experience was like at starred chef Alexandre Silva’s restaurant, which is located in the Saldanha region. In a residential neighborhood, Fogo is on a discreet street, with a completely black facade, already giving clues to what we will find there. As soon as we enter, there is a small waiting area next to the bar, where creative cocktails prepared by bartender João Bruno come out. The contemporary environment, with an industrial feel, with black as the predominant color and the open kitchen in the background, with a counter for those who want to sit and watch the chef work. The lamps are bars that resemble pieces of red-hot wood.

The menu is divided into five sections: wood oven, iron pots, ‘robata’ (grill), bakery and confectionery, and cold cuts/smoked meats. We started our lunch with natural fermentation bread, served with olive oil, homemade butter, pickles and pork pâté, national cheese board, as well as grilled oysters.

For the main dishes, I opted for one of the house’s flagship dishes, oven-baked rice, which arrives at the table in a beautiful iron frying pan. Desserts are also a separate chapter, such as the charcoal-grilled strawberry, with tonka bean and serracen wheat.

In the drinks section, the wine list has more than 159 labels, all of national production and many of them natural, biodynamic and organic. Those who prefer can opt for bold drinks from barman João, such as, for example, “Das Cinzas”, charcoal Gin Fizz, accompanied with green apple and sour.

Certainly going to Fogo is a unique experience in Lisbon! I recommend!
