Regardless of whether you opt for extensions or not, there are some important precautions to prevent eyelash loss and also preserve the health of your eyes and skin in general:

  • Do not use products that have expired on your eyelashes. “Masks, for example, last a maximum of six months once opened”, warns Carina.
  • Only buy ophthalmologically tested products.
  • “Be careful with products that contain synthetic pigments and preservatives, as they can cause sensitivity and allergies in the region”, advises Carina.
  • Never sleep with makeup on. This applies to the entire face, and not just the eye area, after all: it is a fact that not removing makeup contributes to premature skin aging!
  • “Remove the mask with products specific to the region. Waterproof masks especially deserve attention as they are more difficult to remove and can end up sticking to the hair, favoring hair loss”, advises Carina.
  • Avoid using false eyelashes. Even though they may offer a momentarily beautiful appearance, the glue used harms the hair and can tear it off when removing it, in addition to causing contact allergies.
  • Avoid using an eyelash curler! “If used incorrectly, it can rip out your eyelashes”, highlights Carina.
  • Carina explains that one of the main habits that damage eyelashes is rubbing your eyes vigorously. So, do this gently when removing makeup and/or at other times.
  • Maintain a healthy and balanced diet. “Just like our hair, eyelashes follow a growth pattern and diet is also directly linked to this growth. In addition to cosmetics, proteins and vitamins will help eyelashes grow beautiful and healthy. The best foods to help with this goal are fish, eggs, beans and yogurt. Soy protein is also beneficial for eyelash growth”, explains Carina.

Contrary to what many people think, highlights Carina, when done correctly, eyelash extensions do not cause hair loss.

“The procedure is recommended for anyone who wants to highlight their look, except for chemotherapy patients, pregnant women (who have never had extensions done) or people who have alopecia”, explains the eyelash expert.
