Do not think that I am exaggerating: it was just beating our eyes on the bucolic village and the golden dunes to understand that we would hardly find in the rest of the way a place as incredible as that corner on the coast of Espírito Santo. What to do in Itaúnas?

Where is it and how to get to Itaúnas – ES
Located 25 km from Conceição da Barra and 270 km from Vitória, the village is accessible by BR-101 and then by ES-209.
From Vitória, go north to the city of Conceição da Barra and then turn towards Itaúnas. The signs will be your best friends on this journey. And look, the road has breathtaking views, see? The trip lasts around 5 hours, so prepare a good playlist and enjoy the landscape.
You can also get there by taking a local bus. They depart from cities like Vitória, São Mateus and Conceição da Barra. It is a longer trip, but great to feel the taste of local life and who knows how to make new friends on the way.
Things to do in Itaúnas: beaches, forró and trails
The village enchants at first sight, either by the colorful houses around the square or by the neohippie decoration of the various bars and restaurants there.
However, the main attraction of Itaúnas is on nature. The small town is surrounded by gigantic dunes that can reach up to 30 meters high, kills green and warm blue sea. Want to know how to enjoy each of the attractions there? Then connect in our guide below!
1. The National Park of the Dunes of Itaúnas
Created in 1991, 0 Itaúnas Dunes National Park is an environmental protection area that houses one of the most impressive sets of mobile dunes in Brazil. With sands that can reach up to 30 meters in height, it is like a desert next to the sea. Can you imagine what scenario?
And you know what is even more amazing? These dunes are mobile, which means they are always changing places, driven by the region’s strong winds. From time to time you can even see the roof of a house or church of the old village, which had to change places precisely because of the sand.
But it is not only contemplation that the Dune Park lives. You can take a walk along the sand trails (remember to bring water and sunscreen!). And for the bravest, there is the sandboard, a kind of surf in the dunes.
In addition, the park is an ecological sanctuary, home to several species of fauna and flora. Keep an eye out for the small ponds formed among the dunes after the rainy season, they are a spectacle apart.
- Admission: The good news is that admission is free! That’s right, you can explore this spectacle of nature without spending anything.
- How to Arrive : Access to the dunes is made on foot, from the center of Itaúnas. The walk is quiet and well signposted. Prepare for a good walk on the sands!
- Best Time to Visit: The dawn and sunset are spectacular in the dunes, besides having milder temperatures. But any time of the day is magic there.
How the Dunes of Itaúnas appeared
The landscape of the region only exists because, a few years ago, people destroyed the local nature. Ironic, isn’t it? Around the middle of the last century, the eucalyptus monoculture ended the native vegetation of the area and, with it, it was gone the natural protection that prevented the sand of the dunas from invaining the city.
Everyone had to escape from the original village and a new city was built on the right bank of the Itaúnas River.
The new life of the inhabitants of Itaúnas also brought new perspectives to the place. Since the 1970s, when the last family joined their things and crossed the river, Itaúnas has been experiencing a period of intense expansion of tourism, today the main economic activity of the city. The expansion was so much that, to prevent the decharacterization of the village, the construction of new inns has been prohibited since 2004.
Trails in the Dunes of Itaúnas National Park
It is recommended to hire local guides to follow the trails, especially if you do not have much experience in the subject.
The most famous trail is the Tamandaré, which lasts only 40 minutes and is of low difficulty level, but there are other larger and more complex ones in the park.
This trail that winds the heart of the park, offering an immersion in the rich biodiversity of the region. She takes this name because she passes by the house of Tamandaré, a former village resident who was the only one to be spared by the advance of the Dunes.
He managed to stay there until 2006, but today the house is empty. During the route, you will have the opportunity to see other landmarks of the old village.
For more information about the park trails, visit the official website.
2. Itaúnas beach and sunset on the dunes
To reach the beach of Itaúnas, the closest to the village, you need to cross the entire length of the dunes. The landscape of the route is unique and indescribable, despite the large amount of sand “very” hot that you will have to face.
From above, it is possible to have a panoramic view of the beach on one side and the Itaúnas river on the other. If you are lucky (which was not our case), it is also possible to visit the archaeological sites that keep from remnants of pre-Columbian civilizations to the ruins of the ancient village, visible from time to time according to the sand movement.
The most fascinating is how the dunes meet the sea. This landscape creates a contrast that looks like painting!
The idea is to stay on the beach until the evening and then climb the dunes to see the per the dunes! It is something really unforgettable!

3. The Museum of Itaúnas
And since we are talking about the history of the city, a good place to start the tour is the city museum, which houses an interesting collection of old photographs, objects and artifacts that tell the story of the village and its residents.
The most exciting thing is to see how the local community is linked to its roots. The museum is not only an exhibition space, but a place of celebration of the identity and collective memory of Itaúnas.
There is also a special part dedicated to Forró. There, you will understand how the rhythm intertwines with the region’s culture and why this music is so meaningful to the locals.
4. Riacho Doce, the border with Bahía
Itaúnas Beach is the only humanly possible to reach on foot. If you are without a car, you can hire a buggy driver for about R$200.00 to take you to all the beaches in the region, including some deserted ones.
Those who found the salty price can pay a much more comrade value to be taken from Kombi to Riacho Doce Beach, usually the one that most pleases tourists.
The river that gives name to the beach marks the border between Bahia and Espírito Santo. There, you can have the privilege of drinking at the first kiosks of the northeast in a wet bar installed in the natural pool formed by the mouth of the stream.
Because of severe droughts in the region, it is not always that this is possible, which is a pity, because this was a great experience there.
5. the Golden Coast Beach
On the other side of the border, but still close to the beach of Riacho Doce, is a paradise untouched in Bahía (specifically, in Mucuri): Praia da Costa Dourada.
With rustic landscape, golden sand and blue sea, this beach deserves the name it has!
Unlike the bustling Itaúnas Beach, Praia da Costa Dourada is known for being more peaceful and less frequented. Here, you find the perfect space to relax, read a book or simply contemplate the sea.
The beach is surrounded by a well-preserved sandbank vegetation, which adds a special charm to the place.
Because it is a little more isolated, the infrastructure in Praia da Costa Dourada is limited. Therefore, it is a good idea to take everything you will need, such as water, snacks and sunscreen.
And of course, also bring a bag to bring back your trash, keeping the beach clean and beautiful.
6. . 6. The village of Itaúnas
The small village of Itaúnas is full of colorful houses and seems stopped in time. The streets have the rustic charm of the inns and houses decorated with local art.
It is worth passing by to visit the local bars and restaurants. Do not also check the local handicrafts in the various shops scattered around the village. They are unique pieces that carry the creativity of Itaúnas, perfect to take a memory of this experience.
How to enjoy Forró in Itaúnas – ES
But what makes Itaúnas nationally recognized are not their beautiful and pristine beaches. Holder of the title of National Capital of Forró, dance has been a local tradition since the times of the ancient village.
Traditionally, two bars run the party: The “Buraco do Tatu” and the “Bar do Forró”, which alternate the days of operation, always with live music.
It was in the forró de Itaúnas that great bands of the musical style – like the Fala Mansa – were revealed. They say that after the bars close, the forrozeiros continue the party on the beaches or in the town square until the sun rises. Are you going to say that you never heard those verses of the Rain Flame?
“Everyone invites me to dance in Itaúna / In the forró bar and in the hole of the Tatu”

Hole of the Tatu
In a city of forrozeiros, the Tatu Hole stands out as one of the main meeting points for lovers of forró. More than a bar, it is a true cultural icon of the city and region.
With live music ranging from traditional to-serra to more modern styles, the place attracts both locals and tourists in search of an authentic dance and fun experience.
The bar is a meeting place for people of all ages and from around the world. Even those who arrive without knowing how to dance end up letting go and learning a few steps, thanks to the welcoming environment and the dancers always willing to teach.
Bar do Forró
The Bar do Forró alternates with the Hole of Tatu the command of the nights of Itaúnas!
The place breathes tradition, and is known for preserving and celebrating traditional forró, attracting talented musicians from across the region. At the sound of the accordion, the triangle and the zabumba, the visitors dance until the wee hours, experiencing the essence of forró and the northeastern culture.
