Elza Soares, Brazilian singer and star, died aged 91, at her home in Rio de Janeiro. The artist passed away from natural causes.
Elza Soares died at the age of 91 last Thursday (20), of natural causes. The singer, who was one of the biggest names in Brazilian music, was at her home in Rio de Janeiro. The artist’s team published an official statement with all the information regarding her death.
“It is with great sadness and regret that we inform you of the death of singer and songwriter Elza Soares, aged 91, at 3:45 pm at her home, in Rio de Janeiro, due to natural causes,” the note began. “Icon of Brazilian music, considered one of the greatest artists in the world, the singer elected as the Voice of the Millennium had an apotheotic, intense life, which moved the world with her voice, her strength and her determination.”
Finally, at the end of the official statement, Elza’s life and art were celebrated. “The beloved and eternal Elza rested, but she will forever be in the history of music and in our hearts and those of thousands of fans around the world. As Elza Soares wished, she sang until the end.” Likewise, the news that Elza Soares died at the age of 91 was mourned by many artists throughout Brazil, awakening memories about her career and moments lived with her by those who knew her.
Elza Soares dies at age 91 and leaves a colossal legacy
Elza Soares was born Elza Gomes da Conceição, in June 1930. She spent her entire childhood in a community in the neighborhood of Padre Miguel, west of Rio de Janeiro. In this sense, today, the place is known as the Moça Bonita favela. She had her first arranged marriage very early on, and her first child at 13. On the other hand, she suffered sexual and domestic violence before starting her career singing on the city’s radio stations, after her 20s, in the 50s.
Right from the beginning, Elza was recognized as the owner of an extremely powerful and promising voice. Furthermore, it was only in the 60s that the star was already very successful, and had shows booked all over the world. Firstly, she worked with samba, but has also worked with jazz, funk, hip hop and electronic music.
As soon as he began his career, he had a relationship much talked about by the public, with football player Mané Garrincha, two-time world champion for the Brazilian team. The two were married until 1982. The following year, Garrincha died, also on January 20th, like Elza. They had a son, who died at the age of 9, in 1986, due to a car accident. This was another one of Elza’s great tragedies. The artist had 8 children, but lost 4 of them.

The singer has released more than 30 albums in more than 70 years of career. This way, she remained active and her latest album, “Planeta Fome”, was released in 2019. In 2022, she would record a show at Theatro Municipal de São Paulo and another studio album. In 2018, she received a biography, written by Zeca Camargo, entitled “Elza”, as well as a musical. The show had several presentations throughout Brazil, with more than 120 thousand spectators.
