As previously mentioned, edamame is still immature soybeans. Therefore, it has the same benefits as soy, carbohydrates, proteins, fiber, vitamins, minerals and isoflavones. However, because it is green, edamame has the advantage of being lower in calories.

The origin of edamame occurred in 200 BC, in China. In Japan, the green, pea-like vegetable became popular around the year 1275. The food is also very present in Korean cuisine, however, there the vegetable is called “kong”, like most grains.

In the United States, edamame consumption is very common. There, the vegetable is defined as soybeans. Due to its soft texture and mild flavor, edamame can be consumed fresh, right after being harvested while still green.

In Brazil, despite being the second largest producer of soy in the world, consumption of this vegetable is still very low. Its peculiar flavor has not yet become popular with all Brazilians, but it is gaining more and more fans. So much so that it is now possible to find the vegetable in common markets and supermarkets, both in fresh and frozen versions.
