Does discharge during pregnancy harm the baby?

Pregnancy

Yellow, brown, greenish, white or dark discharge during pregnancy can harm the baby if not properly treated. This is because they can lead to premature rupture of the membranes, premature birth, low birth weight and even some infection in the baby.

Discharges are caused by microorganisms that populate the vaginal flora and, over time, reach its interior, negatively affecting the baby and being potentially dangerous. These discharges can be a sign of diseases such as Trichomoniasis, Bacterial Vaginosis, Gonorrhea or Candidiasis and should be treated as soon as possible.

Treatment for discharge during pregnancy

Treatment for discharge during pregnancy must be instituted quickly and can be done using medications orally or in ointment form, for a period of time determined by the doctor. Although there is a consensus that pregnant women should not take any medication in the 1st trimester of pregnancy, the doctor must check the risk/benefit in each case.

If the woman notices that she has some type of discharge, she should observe its color and whether it has a smell. So, when you make an appointment with your obstetrician, you must inform him of all this valuable information, as it is essential for the diagnosis and the therapy to be instituted.

Normal pregnancy discharge

It is normal to have discharge during pregnancy, but this refers to watery or milky discharge that is light in color and has no smell. This type of discharge can come in large or small quantities and does not cause any harm to the baby, being only the result of increased local blood circulation and hormonal changes typical of pregnancy and, therefore, does not require any treatment.
