In Brazil, we don’t have the culture and custom of celebrating this North American festival, but we should: the Thanksgiving dishes look delicious!

If there’s one thing we like, it’s food. Brazil is full of them. From feijoada to good old coxinha, we fell in love with Brazilian flavors and delicacies.

If we were to select typical dishes for certain commemorative dates, then we would be drooling with hunger. Who doesn’t love salpicão at Christmas or chocolates at Easter. But there is a date, and its recipes, that Brazil doesn’t know much about: thanksgiving dishes.

Thanksgiving Day, the original name of the date, was made to thank God for the good things that happened through prayers and celebrations.

It began in 1621, by settlers from the New England region who had a good harvest, however, the party only gained official status in 1941, when former American president Franklin Roosevelt decreed the fourth Thursday of November as the day of Thanksgiving.

Nowadays it is known for its magnificent parades and delicious banquets. We have selected some typical dishes for you to enjoy.

Peru (Turkey)

We started with the Thanksgiving main dish. The delicious turkey has two options for how to prepare it. It can be roasted or deep-fried, and is generally served whole, with crumbs around it or in its filling. This dish is the star of the dinner, so it can’t be missed.

Stuffing

If it’s not good farofa, the turkey filling can be stuffing, a mixture of chopped bread with seasonings, onion, among other ingredients. It can also be served as a side dish. If you want, you can also call it the stir-fry of the gods.

To accompany the main dish, the puree can come in the traditional form we know or with special ingredients to make it even more delicious. Additions of bacon, garlic, onion and cheese are also common.

It’s time for desserts. Pumpkin pie is one of the most traditional items of the day. It usually has eggs, flour, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla essence, among others. And believe me, it is an unparalleled delight.

Cranberry (or blueberry, in Brazil), is used as the main ingredient in the compote (or jelly, in Brazil) served at the Thanksgiving feast. It can also accompany savory foods on the plate, to add a bittersweet contrast to the taste.
