This week the USA celebrated the day in memory of Martin Luther King. The date, January 21st, is marked in honor of one of the men who fought most for racial equality in the country. And it is in Atlanta that Luther King was born and made his history. The House where Martin Luther King was born
The house where Martin Luther King was born, located in 501 Auburn Avenue em Atlanta, is open to the public and visits are free. A guide walks through every room of the house, which has two floors, and tells details about his childhood. This was his grandparents’ house and he lived there until he was 12 years old alongside his parents, siblings and other family members.
The tours are daily and they happen 10am to 5pm (one per hour, except between June and August when they occur every 30 minutes). However, as they are limited to 15 people per visit, sometimes it is difficult to find a tour nearby. You must purchase a ticket to enter the house. It is worth remembering that taking photos inside the place is not allowed.
Church
Near the house where Martin Luther King was born is Ebenezer Baptist Church. It was there that Martin Luther King and his father preached to many people. Restored in 2001, the place maintains aspects of the time when it was used by the family.
Tomb and exhibits
No Martin Luther King Center are the tombs of Luther King and his wife Coretta. In addition, the place houses museums with various exhibitions about the legacy of the American activist.
Who was Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in 1929 in Atlanta and was one of the leaders of black civil rights in the United States. One of his most famous speeches (“I Have a Dream”) was given in Washington in 1963, a year before he received the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968.
