Fashion

Considered the “Bible of Fashion”, Vogue magazine is the most important fashion publication in the world with more than 100 years of history. Get to know.

Fashionista or not, everyone knows or has at least seen or heard about the Vogue magazinethe largest fashion publication in the world.

With 129 years of history, and a total of 26 international editions, the influential power that the publication has achieved in that time is undeniable. The monthly magazine dictates what is beautiful and what is not around the world, in addition to covering topics such as lifestyle, beauty, culture and of course what is popular on catwalks around the world.

The magazine began as a weekly fashion serial back in 1892, created by Arthur Baldwind Turnure and Harry McVickar and years later it was purchased by Condé Montrose Nast and became what it is today. Therefore, today we are going to learn a little more about the history of this magazine that revolutionized the world of fashion.

Beginning and consolidation of the magazine

The history of the largest fashion magazine in the world began at the end of 1892, in New York City. Then, Arthur Baldwin Turnure and Harry McVickar decided to launch a small fashion serial called Vogue. Initially, the leaflet, which was aimed at a female audience in New York’s high society, had only 30 pages.

The weekly serial covered news and social events in high society at the time, and unlike today, at the time it focused on articles about fashion for men and women. In addition, it included reviews of books, music and, of course, tips on etiquette and how to behave at social events. In fact, topics that at the time were considered very futile.

So, with the growth of the fashion and beauty industry across the world, the Condé Nast Publications group saw the potential of the serial and purchased it in 1909. Therefore, the serial underwent a complete reformulation, with the first edition being released on June 24 of that year. So, in addition to becoming monthly, the new reformulation made the magazine’s content even more attractive to the female audience, making fashion an object of desire for women at that time.

Therefore, Condé Nast transformed the hitherto small weekly serial into one of the most influential magazines of the 20th century.

Vogue magazine’s first international publication

In fact, at that time books were still not very accessible to most people. Therefore, for those who wanted to read and seek instruction, they usually found it in magazines. In this way, this type of publication ended up becoming even more popular.

Then, in the 1910s, Vogue began to overcome geographic barriers and began to become a worldwide phenomenon. The magazine’s first edition outside the United States was British Vogue, launched on September 15, 1916, less than 10 years after Condé Nast purchased the publication.

This was just the beginning of the magazine’s expansion, which gained editions in several other countries, such as France in June 1920, which, incidentally, is one of the most popular in the world. As well as Italy, Australia, Spain, Germany, and several others. Currently, Vogue has 26 editions in different countries around the world. Therefore, the Vogue label began to dictate fashion not only in its country of origin, but throughout the world.

Anna Wintour e a Vogue

In 1988 Anna Wintour took over as editor-in-chief of Vogue, she is considered a fashion icon and changed the history of the magazine. Therefore, she arrived with everything to completely transform the magazine again. So, with her in charge, several hitherto unknown designers as well as novice models became celebrities with her endorsement.

Furthermore, Wintour was responsible for launching several segmented products. As is the case with the online version of the magazine, launched in 1996. She also launched Teen Vogue in 2003, a version of the magazine aimed at a younger audience, focusing on fashion, celebrities and, of course, current affairs. As well as Men’s Vogue, focused on the male audience, and Vogue Living, to talk about design and decoration.

Other products launched by the editor-in-chief include: Vogue Catwalks, Vogue Noiva and Vogue Jóias. However, the latter were later extinguished, due to production costs and little return.

Anna Wintour remains in charge of the magazine to this day, directly influencing everything that is relevant in the world of fashion. The editor-in-chief’s impact in this field is undeniable.

Vogue Brazil

With international expansion, it is clear that Brazil could not remain in a Vogue. Then, in May 1975, the first edition of Vogue Brasil was launched, which was also the first edition of the magazine in Latin America.

At the time, the magazine was part of the Carta Editorial group, and its first editor was Luiz Carta, who remained in the position until 1986, when he left the publication to direct the Spanish edition of Vogue. With the departure of Luiz, his son, Andrea Carta took charge of the magazine, and remained for 17 years until his death.

With the death of the editor, Patrícia Carta, Andrea’s sister, became the editor-in-chief, from 2003 until 2012. During Patrícia’s management, the magazine went through several changes and implementations, as did Anna Wintour. In Brazil, national versions of the American edition were also launched, such as Homem Vogue, Casa Vogue, Teen Vogue and Vogue Kids. In addition to Bridal, Jewelry and Catwalk specials.

Anyway, As of November 2010, Vogue Brasil became controlled by the Edições Globo Condé Nast group, after 35 years of management by Grupo Carta. In fact, the new owner of the magazine is a joint venture between the Globo group and the Condé Nast group, which holds the rights to the Vogue brand.

At the moment, Vogue Brasil is led by editor-in-chief and journalist Paula Magestewho has been in the position since October 2020, when then-editor Daniela Falcão was dismissed from the company.
